It's official! The BMW i8 is the best-selling hybrid sports car in the world in 2015. In fact, even if all other carmakers combine the sales of their hybrid sports cars, they wouldn't still be able to surpass the 5,456 units of the BMW i8 sold around the world last year.
BMW i8 is powered by a cutting-edge plug-in hybrid technology – a harmonious combination of a three-cylinder turbocharged engine and an electric drive system – that delivers a max system output of 266 kW/362 hp, while consuming just 2.1 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers on the combined cycle (134.5 mpg imp).
Moreover, the system emits 49 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer (combined). Ian Robertson, BMW AG Board Member for Sales and Marketing, remarked that the success of the BMW i8 "speaks for itself.” He noted that the i8 has exceeded the German premium carmaker's expectations by becoming the most successful hybrid sports car in the world.
BMW plans to continue the momentum of the BMW i8 by unveiling exclusive special-edition models at the Geneva Motor Show – all demonstrating different ways to modify and customize the hybrid sports car. First up will be the BMW i8 Protonic Red Edition, which will be available only for a limited period.
This version of the BMW i8 features a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell as well as the BMW eDrive drive system technology. Finished in Protonic Red paint with Frozen Grey metallic accents, the first special edition of the BMW i8 is accentuated by BMW W-spoke 470 light-alloy wheels finished in Orbit Grey metallic with hubs in Aluminum matt.
These wheels are wrapped in 215/45 R20 front tires and 245/40 R20 rear tires. Moreover, the interior of the first special-edition BMW i8 features red double-stitching and applications in high-grade carbon fiber.
In 2015, BMW delivered 66-percent more BMW i3 and BMW i8 models (29,513 units) in 36 countries, which means that BMW's i range of products, coupled with portfolio of highly convenient services, has the largest global presence among electric vehicles.
Add that to the fact that even in its launch phase, the BMW i brand and its BMW i3 and BMW i8 models earned more awards and accolades than any other auto brands – including International Engine of the Year award for both the BMW i8's TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder engine and overall hybrid drivetrain.
Moreover, the BMW i8 was recognized as the World Green Car of the Year and Green Luxury Car as well as given the Paul Pietsch Award from the “auto motor und sport” German motoring magazine.
