The 2017 Geneva Motor Show is turning out to be a showcase, at least for BMW. This is because the German premium carmaker has announced it will debut a couple of new cars at the prominent auto show next month.
First off, BMW will unveil the next generation of the BMW 5 Series Touring (G30) in Geneva. This will be the second body variant of the new generation of the 5 Series, after the sedan version. Available with all the elements found in the 5 Series Sedan such as all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering and roll stabilization, the new BMW 5 Series Touring boasts of considerable boot capacity (up to between 570 liters and 1,700 liters) and higher load capacity (up to between 720 kg and 730 kg). It also features a 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrest and an electric remote backrest release, as well as an automatic tailgate operation. The new 5 Series Touring is touted to be around 100 kg lighter than its predecessor.
At launch, the touring body variant of the BMW 5 Series will be available in four versions -- BMW 530i Touring (252 hp 2.0 liter petrol engine), BMW 540i xDrive Touring (340 hp 3.0 liter petrol engine), BMW 520d Touring (190 hp 2.0 liter diesel engine) and BMW 530d Touring/ BMW 530d xDrive Touring (265 hp 3.0 liter diesel engine). Compared to the engines found in the previous generation, the powerplants in the new 5 Series Touring are around 11 percent more fuel efficient. BMW will commence selling new 5 Series Touring in June 2017.
BMW will introduce additional variants with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations over the course of 2017.
Aside from the new BMW 5 Series Touring, BMW will also introduce a new special edition of the BMW i8. This special version – the new BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition – is finished in a model-specific paint from BMW Individual, as highlighted by Frozen Grey metallic accents. The exclusively elegant dark exterior of the BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition is matched inside by a dark interior as accented by bright yellow contrast stitching across the center console and seats.
The new BMW i8 Protonic Frozen Black Edition and the new BMW 5 Series Touring will be joined on stage by the face-lifted version of the BMW 4 Series. It will feature a number of mild updates on its design, engine and chassis. It will also feature new LED headlights and front fog lamps, as well as new tail lamps. Its air intakes on the front bumper and the rear apron have also been modified. BMW will be offering two new exterior finishes -- Snapper Rocks Blue and Sunset Orange – for the face-lifted BMW 4 Series.
