Plug-in hybrid version of Bentley Bentayga will debut in Geneva, slated to start selling in 2Q

Article by Christian A., on January 8, 2018

There had been speculations that the Bentley Bentayga will soon have a hybrid powertrain that will be added to its engine lineup. And recently, the automaker confirmed this matter. So expect to see the SUV with a PHEV variant at the upcoming 2018 Geneva Motor Show in early March this year.

Under the Bentley Bentayga’s hood will be an engine that is similar to that of the Porsche Panamera E-Hybrid. It will be equipped with a 2.9 liter V6 that will be paired to an electric motor so it can produce a total output of about 462 horsepower (345 kilowatts). Expect the Bentayga to have a similar range as the Panamera, capable of reaching 30 miles (48 kilometers) on purely electric energy.

Currently, the Bentley Bentayga offers a 6.0 liter W12 biturbo and a 4.0 liter V8 biturbo diesel, which the new PHEV version will join. This version will go on sale in the second quarter of 2018. We should mention though that the automaker is confident that that it will be the best selling option in the United States market.

However, the PHEV is not the only thing that Bentley has planned. They also want to launch a new V8 gasoline engine that will most probably be a 4.0 liter biturbo motor from the Volkswagen Group. This motor can make the Porsche Cayenne produce 550 horsepower (410 kilowatts), and 568 pound-feet (770 Newton-metres) of torque. On the other hand, the Lamborghini Urus can carry out an impressive 650 horsepower (484 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton metres) of torque.

Since all three luxury SUVs share the same MLB platform, it will not be a problem for Bentley engineers to adapt a biturbo V8 engine for the requirements of the Bentayga. Same thing goes with the hybrid powertrain. It will not be difficult for them to install this under the super-SUV’s hood.

That being said, the Bentayga is currently doing very well according to the British manufacturer. But expect it to become even more popular when the new versions become available, giving customers in the United States a wider range of options, up from the single W12 model that is currently up for grabs.

When the Bentayga Hybrid finally becomes available to the market, it will be the first ever electrified vehicle of the ultra luxury brand. This also means that the automaker will continue rolling out plug-in hybrid versions of its entire range, as they promised a year ago.

Today, the Bentayga SUV is one of the most popular models by Bentley. In 2016, sales were up by 5,586. Though they have not shared last year’s sales figures for the Bentayga, we know that overall sales of the company were down at 7,498 during the first nine months.
