German premium carmaker BMW is officially previewing in metal the precursor model for the most exotic variant of its new flagship model. Providing a glimpse of the new BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and the BMW M8 Gran Coupe, the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is being unveiled at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.
Essentially, the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe serves as a follow up for the BMW 8 Series Coupe Concept. Unveiled in 2017, the 8 Series Coupe Concept offers a glimpse into the possible design of the much-awaited 8 Series grand tourer that will be launched into the market this year as part of BMW’s massive product offensive. Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design, remarked that the Concept M8 Gran Coupe serves as a window to what he described as the most exotic and alluring variant of the new 8 Series flagship. It defines luxury in a whole new meaning – it is polarizing and ultra-sporty.
Just like the BMW Concept 8 Series, the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is influenced by BMW’s new design language, as evident on its expressive surfaces, which graphic arrangement is underscored by precise character lines. The front end sports a muscular, precisely contoured bonnet as well as radiator grille kidneys which contours broaden as they drop towards the road to emphasize the low center of gravity of the Concept M8 Gran Coupe.
Since the kidney elements are connected by an unbroken grille surround, they visually form a large single element. Bordered by a gold-colored surround, these kidneys are flanked by highly positioned headlights that employ the lighting technology adopted from the M8 GTE endurance racer. These unique headlights give BMW’s signature four-eyed front end a more hexagonal interpretation. Just below these elements are massive air intakes made from carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP).
The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is wrapped in the Salève Vert finish, which seemingly changes from green to grayish blue in different lights. This finish is complemented by details finished in golden color like the window graphic, signature M gills, wheel rims, gold-colored brakes and the M twin exhaust tailpipes.
Meanwhile, the profile of the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe reveals a sporty coupe silhouette defined by a long bonnet, flowing roofline, long wheelbase and short tail. The Concept M8 Gran Coupe features a roof made from CFRP, helping visually and physically lower its center of gravity. The design study also comes with aerodynamically optimized exterior mirrors.
On the rear, the new BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe is marked by a wide track and flared wheel arches as well as a rear spoiler and several horizontal lines. The outer edges of the rear end are occupied by slim, sculpted rear lights with black glass covers. The rear end also features a prominent diffuser and two sets of M twin exhaust tailpipes.
The BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe practically teases the new captivating form of the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe and BMW M8 Gran Coupe that will be unveiled in 2019.
