At the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, Bentley is introducing the very first luxury plug-in hybrid vehicle in the world as packaged within the body of the Bentley Bentayga. Marking the British carmaker’s first step towards electrification, the new Bentley Bentayga Hybrid delivers in terms of performance, comfort, efficiency and luxury.
According to Adrian Hallmark, new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bentley Motors, the new Bentayga Hybrid marries traditional Bentley values with the latest technologies. It offers the best of both worlds -- effortless performance and emission-free driving – as confined in a luxurious package that is truly a Bentley. Bentley will open the order books for the new Bentayga Hybrid in the second half of 2018. Availability is only in selected markets.
Being a plug-in hybrid, the new Bentley Bentayga Hybrid features a power drive that makes use of a new turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 petrol engine and the highly efficient E Motor (electric motor). The E Motor serves as both electric motor and a generator to optimize the Bentayga Hybrid’s electric-only range.
Just like other Bentayga models, the Hybrid is provided with same permanent four-wheel drive and four on-road modes (Sport, Bentley, Comfort and Custom). Bentley has yet to disclose the full details about its hybrid powertrain, including about it power ratings (output and torque and battery capacity).
However, the British did divulge that a fully recharge Bentayga Hybrid could go all-electric for more than 31 miles or 50 km, as per the NEDC cycle, before needing to be re-powered. When charging from a domestic household socket, it would take around 7.5 hours to achieve a full charge of the battery. However, a home-installed industrial connection allows the charge time to be reduced to only 2.5 hours. Customers may also recharge their Bentayga Hybrid from the nearest charging stations, which could be easily found through the Charging Station Finder app.
To charge the new Bentayga Hybrid, a customer just needs to locate the Vehicle Charge Point on the opposite side to the normal fuel filler. This charge point allows the new Bentayga Hybrid to be connected to either a domestic power supply, or a public charger point.
To maximize the overall efficiency of the new Bentayga Hybrid, it employs satellite navigation information to compute the best usage of electric motor and engine for every trip. Once the navigation system receives the destination information, the most appropriate E Mode will be activated for every part of the trip. Once the Bentayga Hybrid arrives at its destination, the on-board charge will be dropped to zero to maximize overall efficiency.
Instead of the traditional tachometer, the new Bentayga Hybrid features a dial that shows when it is operating in pure EV Drive, or engine speed when the combustion engine is activated.
The new Bentayga Hybrid is provided with an array of driver assistance systems and infotainment features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Traffic Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Crossing Traffic Warning, Top View, Park Assist and Electronic Night Vision. The new Bentayga Hybrid is also equipped with a Head-Up Display, an 8-inch touch screen infotainment system, and the Bentley Entertainment Tablet for rear passengers.
