Bentley celebrates its 100 years with Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner

Bentley Motors’ centenary celebration is just getting started. As the iconic British carmaker unveiled the fastest production SUV in the world so far, it is also celebrating 100 years of existence by unveiling a limited edition collectors’ car – the new Bentley Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner.

Ever since W.O. Bentley founded Bentley Motors on July 10, 1919, the working principle at the carmaker has always been “build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.” Nearly 100 years since then, Bentley’s celebratory model is seen to live to that principle. After all, the Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is inspired by the carmaker’s illustrious motorsport history.

In fact, the Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is paying homage to Sir Henry Ralph Stanley “Tim” Birkin. Considered as one of the original ‘Bentley Boys’ of the 1920s and ‘30s, Birkin wasn’t just a customer but also a racing driver. Back then, Birkin commissioned a series of 4 1/2 Litre supercharged Bentley Blower. One of these was raced by Birkin himself at the 1930 Le Mans 24 Hours. As you may have guessed, Birkin piloted the iconic No.9 Bentley Blower – with power increased from 110 bhp to 175 bhp -- at the race.

To distinguish the Number 9 Edition by Mulliner from a typical Bentley Continental GT, it features a No.9 badgework as well as a bold front grille graphic. Optionally available features include Viridian green or Beluga black exterior finishes, 21-inch 10-spoke wheels, Black Line Specification as well as carbon body kit.

Meanwhile, customers may have the interior of the Number 9 Edition by Mulliner be wrapped in heritage leather in Cumbrian Green or Beluga. Debossed ‘B’ logos are found on seat headrests and door panels. The center console is finished in Engine Spin – a racing car and aviation finish popular in the 1920s and ‘30s – and features an exclusive British Jaeger clock inspired by the original No. 9 ‘Blower’s’ dials. In addition, the Bentley Rotating Display in the Continental GT now features a Bentley ‘Blower’ artefact.

Only 100 examples of the new Bentley Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner will be hand-built in Crewe, England. Each of them gets an ‘1 of 100’ treadplate as well as an 18K gold plated organ stops that takes inspiration from the No.9 Blower.

The new Bentley Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner is powered by a W12 TSI engine that allows it to accelerate from zero 60 mph in 3.6 seconds (100 km/h in 3.7 seconds) and achieve a top speed of 207 mph (333 km/h). The Continental GT Number 9 Edition by Mulliner boasts of a range of around 500 miles.
