2019 Geneva Motor Show: Ferrari F8 Tributo pays homage to carmaker’s most powerful V8 engine

Ferrari and its beloved V8 engine have a lot of history together. This is the same engine that powers the Ferrari 488 GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta). Now, Ferrari has unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show a new two-seater berlinetta that pays homage to its most powerful V8 mill so far – the new Ferrari F8 Tributo.

As it names clearly indicates, the Ferrari F8 Tributo is a tribute to its award-winning V8 engine. For three years in a row – 2016, 2017 and 2018 – Ferrari’s 3,902-cc V8 engine grabbed the “Best Engine” accolade in the International Engine of the Year awards. It was also named as the best engine of the last two decades in 2018.

In the Ferrari 488 GTB, which was unveiled four years ago at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, this 3,902 cc V8 turbocharged engine delivers an astonishing 670 cv of max output at 8,000 rpm and 760 Nm of peak torque in the seventh gear. This amount of power is sent to the rear wheels via a revised seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox derived from 458 Italia. This allows the 488 GTB to sprint from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.0 seconds, to 200 km/h (124 mph) in 8.3 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 330 km/h or 205 mph.

Now in its application under the hood of the Ferrari F8 Tributo, this V8 engine delivers 50 CV more output, which brings its max motive power from 670 cv to 720 cv. This means that this engine offers a record specific power output of 185 cv per liter. This makes this mill the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history for a non-special series car. In addition, this mill sets the benchmark for engines across the board. Thanks to this V8 engine, F8 Tributo has come to represent the highest expression of Ferrari’s classic two-seater berlinetta.

Amazingly, the V8 engine’s 720 cv is delivered without any turbo lag for instantaneous power. Of course, this amount of powered is balanced by exceptional handling made possible by advanced vehicle dynamics solutions such as FDE+ (Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer), latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control (6.1) and the decision to make steering wheel rim smaller in diameter.

Handling, responsiveness and stability are also improved on the Ferrari F8 Tributo thanks to a combination of lower weight and superior aerodynamics. Compared to the Ferrari 488, the F8 Tributo is lighter by 40 kg (dry weight) and boasts of 10-percent better aerodynamic efficiency. Downforce has been increased by 15 percent by employing S-Duct on the front end. Air flow has been improved by more compact, horizontal LED headlights and new brake cooling intakes.
