It was a few weeks ago that Mercedes-Benz revealed the G-Class SUV to the public. And as early as now, they have already surprised us with the more powerful AMG version of it. It is definitely what we expected it to be - except it came earlier than we anticipated. Check out this 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63. Despite its huge, boxy size, this SUV is capable of accelerating to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds. That makes it almost a full second faster than its high-performance predecessor.
You are probably wondering where all this power comes from. Well, apart from the obvious, which is the ample AMG supplied power boost, the same 4.0 liter biturbo V8 has been tweaked so it can carry out 577 horsepower (430 kilowatts). That definitely sounds like a lot despite the fact that it is actually 14 horsepower (10 kilowatts) more than the G63. But aside from that, it is also because the G63 also lost a significant amount of weight, and I mean 375 pounds (174 kilograms) to be specific.
Moreover, the G63 also has a whopping 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-metres) of torque, making it 100 more than the GT R and 60 more than its predecessor. Can you just imagine this boxy G-Class SUV outrunning many hardcore sport sedans out on the streets?
The Mercedes-AMG G63 isn’t just limited to improved performance levels. The engine is actually handled by an AMG Speedshift TCT nine speed automatic with a full-manual model available, together with paddle shifters on the AMG specific sport steering wheel. The transmission then brings power to the 4MATIC all-wheel drive setup.
When looking at it from the exterior, the G63 will definitely stand out from its siblings, because of its unique vertical bar grille. AMG specific styling is apparent with the slightly larger intakes, while the wheel arches have a bit more flare to accommodate wheels that are up to 22 inches in diameter. It also gets a new exhaust system for a louder sound, which features two noise settings. Special badging, AMG door sills, and red brake calipers are other things that are included in the upgrade.
When the G63 becomes available this year, the automaker will offer an exclusive “Edition 1” model, which serves as the G-Class flagship. This will be finished in black paint with matte grey stripes on the sides and red stripes on the mirrors. Mercedes will also offer an AMG Night package that will completely turn your G63 to the dark side, by adding blacked out wheels, and tinting the head lights and tail lights.
So far, pricing details have not been revealed yet, but we shall update you once we hear from the automaker.
