Mercedes-AMG won't be so silent about its performance aspirations as the high-performance arm of Mercedes-Benz unveiled another hardcore model at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. This time around, the performance division is giving more oomph to the new generation of the Mercedes GLE by taking the veil off the new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+.
Even at the first look, the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ is easily identifiable as an AMG offering thanks to a number of elements that only its performance vehicles don. The most glaring of these elements is the AMG-specific radiator grille, which comes with 15 vertical chromed strips. Centrally located on the dynamic-looking Panamericana grille is the Mercedes star in the double ring.
Furthermore, the new AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ features narrow headlamps, the A-Wing with silver-like trim as well as silver chrome-plated. On the rear end, the new GLE 53 4MATIC+ features a horizontal chromed diffuser strip in the rear apron and a special exhaust system with two chromed twin tailpipes. , As standard, the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ rides on 20-inch light alloy wheels with AMG lettering. Customers can choose from seven wheel options, at sizes ranging from 20 inches to 22 inches.
To further make the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ look more hardcore, customers may avail of the optional AMG Night Package that endows the performance SUV with heat-insulating, dark tinted windows, refined black front splitter, refined black tailpipes, dark mirror covers as well as dark roof railing.
Interestingly, the interior of the new AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ also betrays its high-performance nature. For instance the standard seats are upholstered in black ARTICO / microfibre DINAMICA man-made leather with red contrasting topstitching. The roof liner is also in black while the trim elements are in aluminum, as brushed with light longitudinal grain.
The AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ can be transformed into a seven-seater by availing of the optional, foldable third row of seats.
Of course, the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ can’t be called a performance SUV without a sudden surge in its power level. The GLE 53 4MATIC+ is powered by an electrified six-cylinder in-line 3.0-liter engine with twin-turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The engine by itself delivers 435 hp (320 kW) of max output and 520 Nm of torque. This mill is complemented by an EQ Boost starter-alternator – basically an electric motor fitted between the engine and transmission – that can momentarily deliver 16 kW of an additional output and 250 Nm of torque. It also provided power for the 48V on-board electrical system.
As a 4MATIC+ model, the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ is a fully variable all-wheel drive SUV with power sent to the wheel through a 9-speed automatic transmission. These elements are helped by AMG-specific drive programs and the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL air suspension.
