AC Schnitzer ACS5 based on the 2012 BMW M5 F10

German tuner AC Schnitzer has released photos and detailed information with regards to its program for the new BMW M5 F10, which will make its world debut in Geneva. Specifically, the M5 is equipped with a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine tuned with an extra control unit to generate 620 PS (456 kW / 612 hp) and a torque of 790 Nm (582 lb-ft).

The figures are a bit lower than those of the G-Power M5, but still get a boost of 60 PS (44 kW / 59 hp) and 40 Nm (30 lb-ft). Top speed is at 305 km/h (190 mph). 

The ACS5 has aerodynamic components including carbon front spoiler, rear spoiler, rear roof spoiler, carbon rear diffuser and chromed front grille. It features the ACS5 Sport logo and AC Schnitzer side graphics, and is completed with the "Magic Blue" and silver exterior finish. 

The vehicle also features an engine cover, suspension spring kit and chromed twin sports exhaust muffler with sound volume valve control. It also includes AC Schnitzer Type V racing and forged alloy wheels in 20 inches, Type VIII racing forged alloy rims in 21 inches, and Type IV BiColor rims in the same size.

The interior boasts of the "Magic Blue" trim and steering wheel spokes. It also has an aluminum cover for the "i-Drive" system controller, floor mats in velours and aluminum pedals with matching foot rest.

In an awesome development, the V8 engine of the new BMW M5 is mated to a seven-speed M DCT (double-clutch transmission) Drivelogic system that could provide very quick and neat gear shifts both in automated (D) and manual (S) modes. The M DCT Drivelogic system features a control concept similar to that of the sequential M transmission found in the previous M5.

To engage D, S or reverse modes, a model-specific M gear selector is provided. Since the system doesn’t require a clutch pedal for manual gearshift, drivers could keep their foot on the accelerator pedal when shifting gears. To change the gears manually, a driver just needs to access the sequential shift lever or the standard-fitted shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The driver just needs to move the right-hand or left-hand paddles to shift up or down, respectively. Interestingly, M DCT Drivelogic comes with the new Low Speed Assistance function that allows the M5 to move at minimal speed during stop-start traffic by slightly nudging the accelerator pedal.

Three shift programs are embedded on the M DCT Drivelogic,– D1, D2 and D3 for the automated mode and S1, S2 and S3 for the manual mode. As soon as the engine is started, the D1 program is automatically activated, with the gear selection meant to deliver the most efficient driving style. The driver could change modes through a rocker switch located behind the shift lever on the center console.

With the D2 mode, the gear changes are made according to the engine revs and load – suitable for cruising. For a sporty drive, a driver could choose the D3 mode, which has calibrated shift times intended to delay gear changes until the M5’s engine speed has reached a higher range.

On the other hand, the S1 program on the manual mode allows for comfortable and jolt-free gear shifts. The S2 program features faster gear changes with substantial shift jolts felt at higher rpm. For those looking for sportier gear shifts and optimal drive dynamics, the S3 program would be advisable as it also activates the M5’s Launch Control function. When the car’s stability control is turned off, Launch Control makes it possible to harness the max acceleration potential of the M5 by system – just by fully pressing the accelerator down. In this setup, the gear changes are done automatically at the optimum engine speed.
