Subaru released today the first teaser image of the so-called “Boxer Sports Car Architecture”, a new technology exhibit initially referred to as "Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car Technology Concept". According to the manufacturer, we will not see any new concept showing a preview of the upcoming Subaru sports car, currently found under joint development with Toyota Motor Corporation.
Furthermore, the new platform also shows how the next cars from Subaru will use the technology, built around the Horizontally-opposed Subaru Boxer engine.
Toyota Motor Corporation has now come to an agreement with Subaru to develop the Rear-Wheel Drive and include it in the latter’s new generation sports car, aiming to provide more customers with the pleasure of driving. It delivers a higher level of driving excitement coupled with distinctive crisp handling, owing to its “front-wheel-drive layout”, much lowered center of gravity as well as its compact, lightweight body plus short wheel base.
This will be the only front-wheel-drive sports car with a Boxer engine across the globe that uses the expertise of both companies to its advantage: Subaru with its horizontally-opposed boxer engine with performance car technologies and Toyota with its RWD technologies. The new car is based on the engineering philosophy of both companies.

The company’s concept of a front-wheel drive layout was first used in the Subaru P-1. The manufacture of the Subaru Rear-Wheel Drive Sports Car as the company’s first mass-produced front-wheel-drive model, is expected to take place in spring 2012 at its production plant in Japan.
Subaru Philosophy and Development of a Rear-Wheel Drive Model
