Six ways to avoid being locked out of your car

Perhaps one of the most frustrating things that you could experience or might have experienced in being locked out of your car. This is especially true if you are in a hurry and there is no other cars you can use to go to your intended destination.

Being locked out usually happens when you left the key inside the car. You have locked all the windows and the doors without using the key. Then after shutting the door, you peeked inside and the key in the ignition switch or on the seats. Likewise, due to being in a hurry, you might have forgotten to bring along with you the car keys. Again, it might still be hanging on the ignition switch or you might have left it on the seats.

Of course, you can prevent yourself from being locked out of your car, so don’t fret and worry. There are many ways by which you could do this way. Below are some of them.

1. Always be mindful of the key

The main reason that you got locked out of your car is that you forgot the key. Develop the habit of removing the key from the ignition switch and placing it somewhere safe or secured – like your pockets or purse. When this habit sticks on you, you will find yourself removing the key from the ignition and securing it even without thinking about it.

In addition, using brightly colored accessories like key holder, key chain, charm or lanyards can help you keep track of your key. They attract your attention, and in effect, remind you of your car key.

2. Always use the key fob

Make it a habit to use only the key fob to lock the doors of your car. This way, you are always bringing your key with you. Car keys nowadays feature a fob containing a short-range radio transmitter. If you are within between five and 20 meters of the car, you just need to press a button, which sends a radio wave-coded signal to a receiver unit in the car. This receiver unit then locks or unlocks the door.

3. Get spare key

Always keep a spare key on your person, separate from your original key. You can also keep spare keys at home or in a in a magnetic box stuck in an inconspicuous area of your car. Regular keys without a fob or RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) chip can be easily duplicated at a hardware store. Spares of keys with fobs and RFID chips can be made by your local dealership.

4. Contact a locksmith

A locksmith can you unlock your car for some profession fee. In case of a locked out situation, calling a locksmith wouldn’t be a bad idea, so keep his or her contact on your phone book.

5. Join an auto club

For a small annual, local auto club offers a number of services, including a free unlock service. The club will contact and send a locksmith to the location of your car to have it unlocked.

6. Subscribe to OnStar

OnStar is offering a number of systems that can assist you with your car, like security and navigation. In addition, you can call OnStar operator or use their smartphone app to unlock your car.
