Saab has unveiled its latest car at the 2010 LA Auto Show and has provided the official details, photos and specs. It’s obvious that the new car is inspired by the 9-4X Concept.
It has the same distinctive Scandinavian and aircraft-inspired looks that are evident in other Saab vehicles. The new car is offered with two V6 petrol engine options.
These are also found on the Chevrolet Equinox. The 3.0-liter V6 engine is able to deliver 265 hp and it is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and Saab XWD. With this engine, the car can go from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 9.0 seconds.
The other 2.8-liter V6 engine, which generates 300 hp, is available exclusively in Aero specification and it produces 400 Nm spread of torque between 2,000 and 5,000 rpm. Sprinting from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) is accomplished in only 8.3 seconds.
In addition, the Aero models will be fitted with 20-inch, nine-spoke ’turbine’ alloy wheels, as well as a black mesh front grille. The standard versions feature 18-inch, six-spoke alloy wheels.
The car offers plenty of space that can accommodate up to five adults. For infotainment, there are two audio options, a seven-speaker or top-of-the-line, and 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound.
Buyers may also opt for the 8-inch touchscreen, hard disk-based navigation system that offers a bird’s eye map view and 10 GB storage for ‘jukebox’ music files.
Already sporting a broad and powerful stance, the new Saab 9-4X is laden with clean, uncluttered lines that express the carmaker’s Scandinavian design ethos. Just like the 9-5 sedan, the 9-4X features a face inspired by the Aero X concept car, as evident by the deep, three-port grille as well as ice-block-effect lighting themes.
Saab's signature wraparound-effect is implemented in the new Saab 9-4X, as made possible by the disguised windshield and door pillars, with the single glasshouse graphic helping underscore the brand's traditional 'cockpit' appearance. The new 9-4X also features a number of signature Saab elements like a 'hockey stick' waistline, the shape of headlamps, as well as strong C-pillars and a wraparound-effect rear screen.
Meanwhile, the tailgate of the new Saab 9-4X features an integrated rear spoiler that visually lowers and extend the roofline. The rear lights of the new 9-4X have adopted the lighting signature of the new 9-5 sedan. The vehicle also features a LED-lit ice-block bar wrapping around the light units and extending across the lower tailgate. The looks of the rear section are completed by twin rhomboid-shaped exhaust tailpipes integrated into the lower bumper molding.
Interestingly, the bodywork of the new Saab 9-4X is free from unneeded decorations or trims. The lower body of the vehicle features a dark protective appliqué, but has no protective panels and wheel-arch claddings.
Entry-level versions of the new Saab 9-4X ride on 18-inch, six-spoke alloy wheels while Aero variants sit on 20-inch, nine-spoke 'turbine' alloy rims. Aero models also sport a black mesh front grille.
