Lamborghini revealed its latest model at the 2011 LA Auto Show: this is the Gallardo LP 550-2 Spyder! For those who don’t know, the LP stands for Longitudinale/Posteriore, for the mid-engine built longitudinally in front of the rear axle while the 550 refers to the power output in hp, and the 2 stands for the drive to the rear wheels. This means that the definition of the car is real simple: we have 550 hp for the rear wheels and plenty of fun!
With the help of the 5.2-liter V10 engine, the LP 550-2 sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4,2 seconds and has a top speed of 319 km/h or almost 200 mph. Thanks to systematic Lamborghini lightweight design and an extremely low dry weight of just 1,520 kilograms.
Automobili Lamborghini president and CEO Stephan Winkelmann says that the Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder will help the carmaker expand the Lamborghini lineup. It is a purist model that gives the driver another dimension of fun. Winkelmann further comments that the new car will be attractive to a special set of customers that enjoy open air driving coupled with a dynamic driving style, adding that the new model that uses rear-wheel drive is a natural next step for their lineup of spyder cars that use all-wheel drive.
Just by looking at its name, you could already guess at the most significant technical specifications of the Lamborghini LP550-2 Spyder. LP is short for Longitudinale/Posteriore and hints at the mid-engine that is built longitudinally right in front of the rear axle, while 550 hints at the horsepower of the engine. Meanwhile, the 2 relates to the rear wheel drive, and “spyder” equates to pure driving pleasure that will delight all the senses.
If you like hands-on and spirited driving, then the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder is the best fit for you. The setup is such that you have a reliable and stable rear wheel drive while also having extreme precision from the front axle.
The very powerful V10 engine keeps controlled oversteering in check and makes the vehicle very easy to control. That along with the ESP assistant system helps ensure your safety while driving the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder.
Chassis and engine
In order to achieve both safety and driving fun, Sant'Agata Bolognese engineers redesigned the components of the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Spyder extensively. The drive was transferred to the rear axle and the car received a total retuning, including a dampers setting that is set only for the new Gallardo. Further, the car’s aerodynamics was also modified to take into consideration the changes in force and weight distribution.
