The all-new 2016 Ford Explorer made its debut today at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. For those who don’t know, this vehicle represents a midcycle freshening and will arrive in the dealerships next summer. What’s more interesting is that the manufacturer decided to replace the old 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine with a more powerful 2.3-liter EcoBoost, same offered on the 2015 Mustang, which is expected to deliver at least 270 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque.
In addition to this engine, Ford will continue to offer a standard 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 and will develop 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. An even more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine will be available too, with 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to design, the 2016 Explorer shows a rugged look, with the grille and LED headlamps positioned even higher, a new closed-off lower roof rack with channels that cascade rainwater off the vehicle as well as a new rear spoiler.
The redesigned Explorer shows new headlamps with LED signature lightning, standard LED low-beams and available LED fog lamps. The interior was updated too and changes include a higher wrapped and stitched door armrest, new buttons that replace the touch-sense buttons of the infotainment system as well as more refined detailing.
Ford says that the 2016 Explorer will be available in five trim series. The base version is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 naturally aspirated engine bolted to a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission. Moreover, it features LED low-beam headlamps, LED taillamps, 18-inch aluminum wheels painted in silver and a rearview camera with washer.
The 2016 Ford Explorer XLT gets the same engine as the base version, heavy-duty fromt and rear brake calipers, fog lamps, LED signature lightning, 18-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels painted in silver, a steering wheel wrapped in leather and reverse sensing system.
The 2016 Explorer Limited uses the same V6 engine but receives 20-inch wheels, ambient lightning, cargo net, a heated steering wheel, multi-piece satin chrome with Rosewood film accent appliques, perforated leather-trimmed seats, heated and cooled front row seats, 12-speaker Sony Audio System, new front and rear 180-degree camera with washers and hands-free liftgate.
The 2016 Explorer Sport arrives with the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine which delivers its power through the intelligent four-wheel drive with Terrain Management System, a sport suspension, trailer tow package, 20-inch wheels, Explorer badge on the hood, dual exhaust tips, seats wrapped in perforated leather with red stitching, multi-piece satin chrome with carbon fiber interior appearance inserts and a 12-speaker Sony Audio System.
The most interesting addition is the 2016 Ford Explorer Platinum, which will compete against GMC. This model is powered by the 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 petrol engine, which delivers its power through the intelligent four-wheel drive system. Moreover, this version gets dual-panel moonroof, 20-inch wheels, satin chrome mirror caps, satin chrome bodyside cladding insert, adaptive cruise control, collision warning with brake support, real wood accents, a steering wheel wrapped in leather with unique stitching, a 500-watt Sony Audio System, a leather wrapped instrument panel and upper door trim, leather-wrapped door and console armrests, Nirvana leather seats, an all-digital instrument cluster, enhanced active park assist with park-out assist and perpendicular park, as well as the lane-keeping system.
