Audi of America disclosed that at the upcoming 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, the U.S. production laser light will be making its first appearance on the 2017 Audi R8 V10 plus exclusive edition. While the exclusive edition already comes with headlights making full use of LED, each headlight will now be supported with a laser high beam module.
This laser light is just the latest innovation to come out from the same brand that started the practice of utilizing LED technology for the daytime running lights. The use of LED technology was first presented in 2004 with the Audi A8 L W12 and later in 2008 with the R8 having headlights made entirely of LED.
For the 2017 R8 exclusive edition, each laser module placed in each of the headlight will operate a total of four high-intensity laser diodes. What each module does is to bundle the diodes and allow a 450-nanometer wavelength blue laser beam to be produced. This blue laser beam then passes to a phosphor converter that turns it into a pure white and bright light. One identifying quality of the laser headlights is that the headlight housing will have a blue light signature.
Depending on the conditions, the laser beam pattern itself is triggered when running speed is at least 40 mph. Since the laser beam supports the LED high beam, this projects a wide and low beam on the road allowing visibility to be enhanced. Audi revealed that the R8 exclusive edition will also be the first model from the brand to have laser light paired with the dynamic turn signals in the front.
The 2017 R8’s exclusive edition comes in Quantum Gray which shows the full and wide range of what is being offered to customers under the exclusive program of the brand.
In addition to the Quantum Gray paint, each edition will have the titanium black-optic exterior package which has the front grille in gloss anthracite while the Y-design 10-spoke 20-inch wheels is finished in high-gloss anthracite.
The carbon sideblade though will have vertical stripes in Solar Orange which matches the racing shell seats and its vertical leather elements in orange. The leather interior package is in Signal Orange and Black and will have the steering wheel wrapped in leather with a 12 o’clock marker in Signal Orange. It will also have the exclusive door sill trim wrapped in leather.
In addition to the exclusive features, the Quantum Gray exclusive edition will have the carbon ceramic brakes as standard as well as the rear diffuser made of carbon fiber. Standard as well are the fixed wing spoiler in the back, housings of the exterior mirror, lip spoiler in the front, and the fixed backrest of its racing shell seats.
Audi said that a total of 25 units will be made and will have a MSRP of $229,200. This does not include the $1,250 destination charge, title, options, taxes, and dealer charges.
