Chevrolet releases Spark Activ, the tiny rugged hatchback

Article by Christian A., on November 15, 2016

Chevrolet has managed to convert the Spark into something similar to a crossover. Nicknamed the Spark Activ, it is easy to see it has the usual styles typically associated with crossovers. For example, both the front section and the rear end, and even the sides, have the faux-metal brush guards in silver. There are also wheel wells and rocker panels. Even the bumpers in the front and the rear are covered in black moldings.

The Spark Activ’s interior reveals that it is enveloped in black leatherette upholstery. Even the steering wheel has this treatment. Equipped as standard inside, among others, is the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system which comes with a 7-inch touchscreen. The features also display compatibility with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other features fitted as standard, to name a few, include cruise control air conditioning, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and keyless entry. It may also be turned into a 4G hotspot. Space is not much of an issue as when the seats in the rear are folded down, the total load space is 771 liters (27.2 cu. ft.).

Going to the exterior, the front section has big fog lamps placed in housings having the same color as the body. On top of this are roof bars while the grille has the “Activ” badge placed on a silver plate. Looking at the suspension, it is clear it is higher by 10 mm (0.4 inches) with the body being fitted with the alloy 15-inch wheels. While this is what Volkswagen did with the Golf Alltrack, it is not sure if the Activ would offer off-road capability as well. Still, this change means that it would be able to meet urban-related driving issues compared to the standard Spark.

Powering the Spark Activ will be the 4-cylinder 1.4-liter gasoline engine with the output being transmitted to the front wheels through the manual 5-speed gearbox. Chevrolet though is offering as an option the continuously variable automatic gearbox. While nothing has been released with regards to performance, General Motors sated that under manual transmission, fuel economy has been rated at 37 mpg for highway and 29 mpg for city.

That Chevrolet is coming out with the Spark Activ is not a surprise as many automakers have been releasing small versions of the hatchback. Examples include the Dacia Sandero Stepway, Hyundai i20 Active, and the Opel Adam Rocks, all of which have become well-liked in Europe. But the Spark Activ’s entry into the U.S. market is unprecedented.

Chevrolet said that sales are expected to start by the first quarter of next year. For the manual model, prices begin at $16,945, with the automatic variant is priced from $18,045.
