Fans and enthusiasts of the Mercedes-Benz CLS don’t have to endure anymore the teasers over the upcoming third generation of the four-door coupe. This is because Mercedes Benz has finally unveiled the next generation of the CLS four-door coupe – now more impressive and more intelligent – at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The third generation of the CLS coupe is underpinned by the MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, which means it has some similarities with E-Class sedan. However, the driving experience provided by the CLS coupe is different, since it boasts of a sportier chassis tune. Compared to its predecessor, the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz CLS coupe has its length extended by 2.0 inches while its height has been shrunk by 0.5 inch.
Nonetheless, the new generation coupe is easily recognizable as the CLS, but is now influenced by the carmaker’s Sensual Purity design language. Its front end is defined by the diamond grille common with Mercedes coupes, with a single louver. Now, the contours of the grille are similar to those of the grille on the Mercedes-AMG GT. Dynamically following these contours while bordering the grille are very flat and wide LED headlamps with inward-slanting flanks.
When viewed from the sides, the new CLS reveals a high, arching waistline and a low greenhouse with frameless side windows. Its muscular rear shoulder line blends seamless into the flat rear end, which is defined by the two-section LED taillamps with crystalline appearance, reflectors on the rear bumper, and the Mercedes star at the center of the trunk lid.
Inside, the CLS coupe is marked by utmost luxury, as defined by high-grade materials, high level of finish and clear basic lines. The interior is designed to impress spaciousness with the wave-like course of the design extending from the front to the rear doors. The ambient lighting could be individually adjusted in 64 colors. Interestingly, when the temperature setting of the air conditioning system is changed, the air vents change color to show whether the cabin is being warmed or cooled. For the first time, the CLS Coupe is a five-seater. But since the outer rear seats look like the front seats, they have the impression of a sporty single seat.
The third-generation of the Mercedes-Benz CLS features the mild hybrid EQ Boost powertrain. This system employs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six that delivers 362 hp of max output and 369 pound-feet of peak torque. This is backed up by an ISG (integrated starter/generator) and a 48 volt onboard electrical system. The ISG delivers up to 21 hp of output and 184 lb-ft of instant torque. With power sent to the wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission, this mild hybrid powertrain offers the performance of an eight-cylinder engine but with significantly lower consumption.
The new generation Mercedes-Benz CLS coupe will first arrive in the United States next fall as the CLS450 (two-wheel drive) and CLS450 4MATIC (all-wheel drive). The new CLS Coupe is now laden with technologies found in the new S-Class, in particular the latest generation of driving assistance and safety systems. These include, as standard, Active Brake Assist, Attention Assist, Pre-Safe and Pre-Safe Sound.
An optional Driver Assistance Package is also available and it includes Active Distance Assist Distronic, Active Speed Limit Assist, Active Steering Assist, Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function and Evasive Steering Assist. Also included in the package are Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist, Pre-Safe Plus and Pre-Safe Impulse Side. Meanwhile, the LED Intelligent Light System could be specified with the optional advanced LED headlamps and Ultra Wide Beam high beams.
At launch, a special model – the CLS Edition 1 – will be available. This launch model includes black pearl nappa leather upholstery, an AMG Line body kit, LED Intelligent Light headlamps and 19-inch multi-spoke AMG light alloy wheels in black.
