Porsche has finally unveiled the eight generation of its iconic sports car on the eve of the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. The Porsche 911 enters the 992 generation with two all-new offerings for the 2020 model year. More powerful and more dynamic than before, the new 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S make use of the formula that made the 911 an icon, making them a true 911.
Outside, the new 2020 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are easily identifiable as Porsche models; after all the Porsche design DNA is timeless. Moreover, the exterior of the new 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S now look more muscular than before. This is made possible by its wider wheel housings that accommodate 20-inch front wheels and 21-inch rear wheels.
Compared to their predecessors, the all-new 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are wider on the front by 45 mm (1.77 inches) as well as on the rear to 1,852 mm (72.91 in), making them as wide as the previous 911 Carrera 4 and 911 GTS models. Interestingly, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminum, except from front and rear fascias.
Up front, the front luggage compartment lid – located between the new LED headlights – now features pronounced contours similar to the design of the first 911 generations. On the sides, the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S have electric door handles that sit flush, only extending outward. The rear end of the these eighth generation 911 models feature wider, variable-position rear spoiler as well as a seamless, elegant light bar.
Inside, the new 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S boast of a completely new interior marked by the clear, straight lines of the dashboard with recessed instruments – as inspired by 911 models of the 1970s. It is just the eight-gen 911 Carrera models are more modern, featuring two thin, frameless, free-form displays flanking the tachometer. Just below the 10.9-inch touchscreen of the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is a compact switch panel with five buttons offering direct access to key vehicle functions. The interior can be availed with an optional Adaptive 18-way Sport Seats Plus with improved lateral support.
Both the new 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S are more powerful than their predecessors. They are powered by turbocharged flat-six engine that delivers 443 hp of motive power, or around 23 hp more powerful than before. This power is sent to the rear wheels of the 911 Carrera S and to all wheels of the 911 Carrera 4S via an 8-speed PDK dual clutch transmission as standard. This allows the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and 3.4 seconds, respectively – or 0.4 seconds quicker than their predecessors. A manual gearbox could be availed but a later date.
If the optional Sport Chrono Package is availed, the sprint times of the Porsche 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S drop to 3.3 seconds and 3.2 seconds, respectively. The 911 Carrera S can go as fast as 191 mph while the 911 Carrera 4S can cruise up to 190 mph.
Interested customers could now order the new 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S for a base MSRP of $113,200, or the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera 4S for starting MSRP of $120,600. MSRP excludes $1,050 in delivery, processing and handling fee. Both models are expected to arrive in the United States in Summer 2019.
