Futuristic Lexus Skyjet to appear in Luc Besson’s Valerian Sci-fi action film

Article by Christian A., on November 16, 2016

Lexus travels into space in probably the much-awaited sci-fi movie this 2017. The film, “Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets” is Luc Besson’s adaptation of a French comic book series. The European motion picture is set in a highly unusual intergalactic world known as the Alpha city. Thus, a high-tech space vehicle is an inevitable choice. Luc Besson’s sci-fi tale will be featuring Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke and Rihanna while Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHann will be playing the major role as space agents.

Interestingly, the single-seat space craft designed by Europacorp and Lexus bears a close resemblance to Lexus’ upcoming model. The SkyJet’s triangular headlamps and spindle nose grille are obviously inspired by the new LC500 Coupe. We couldn’t help but wonder if Lexus will be building real space ships in the next 700 years. The SkyJet as we know is only a fictional flying machine since it is envisioned for the 28th century. Though we won’t be there when it happens, at least we can get a hold of Lexus’ latest LC500 Coupe.

Designing the SkyJet has required Besson and his team to consult Takeaki Kato, Lexus’ Chief Engineer for advise. Europacorp is a film and television studio where Luc Besson (the director) is also the founder. Besson fondly shared his thoughts about their partnership with Lexus. He admired the brand for centering its technology and innovation towards the future. Their teamwork has nevertheless brought the most futuristic design for a spacecraft that would fit the story’s 28th century setting. The modern design cues very much represent the “Valerian era”, which is projected 700 years ahead of our time.

David Nordstrom, Lexus’ Global Branding Department GM expressed his gratitude for being part of Luc Besson’s futuristic film. According to Nordstrom, Lexus is honoured to make Besson’s dream into reality and that they have enjoyed the challenge it has brought to their brand. This inspires them to deliver the most advanced design philosophy and technology innovations in their upcoming engagements.

Europacorp has also produced blockbuster films such as “The Transporter”, “Lucy” as well as the movie “Taken”. Its latest films include “Renegades” featuring JK Simmon and Sullivan Stapleton, “Miss Sloane” which stars Jessica Chastain and “Shut In” with Naomi Watts. “Valerian and the City of A Thousand Planets” will come out in cinemas this July 2017. In the meantime, you can watch the recently released trailer to catch a glimpse of the glorious SkyJet flying in the outer space.

EuropaCorp and Lexus Unveil 28th Century Spacecraft 'SKYJET in Upcoming Sci-Fi Epic: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Today, Lexus announced the formation of a creative partnership with film studio EuropaCorp. One of the early highlights of this collaboration will be the highly anticipated 2017 science fiction film, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, starring Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHaan. Lexus collaborated with the Valerian creative team, as they imagined and brought to life the vision for the SKYJET, a single-seat pursuit craft featured in the film.

An epic teaser trailer unveiled online today (http://valerianmovie.com) gives fans a long-awaited first look at footage from the film. Viewers will also get a first glimpse of the SKYJET maneuvering through the intergalactic citadel of Alpha.

The Valerian team created the SKYJET with the ambition of featuring a vehicle grounded in reality but befitting of the Valerian world, set 700 years in the future. The creative team met with Lexus' Chief Engineer, Takeaki Kato and the Lexus design team, to discuss incorporating believable, imaginative technologies and contemporary design cues into the final iteration of the SKYJET.

The SKYJET design also incorporates an adapted interpretation of Lexus' signature "spindle" grille, and a similar headlight design to that of the hotly anticipated 2018 Lexus LC coupe, defined by an athletic and aerodynamic shape.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets features an all-star cast including Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, Rihanna, and Kris Wu. The project marks Luc Besson's most ambitious film to date and the largest-budget European motion picture ever produced. The feature film is an adaptation of the French comic series 'Valérian,' written by Pierre Christin and illustrated by Jean-Claude Mézières. The film is produced by Virginie Besson-Silla.

Commenting on the partnership, director Luc Besson said, "For this partnership we were looking for a brand that's pioneering in innovation and technology, who is focused on the future more than the past."

The brand is set to provide unique fan experiences over the next nine months, designed to bring enthusiasts from around the world closer to the action leading up to the film's release in July 2017.

Commenting on the development of the SKYJET, David Nordstrom, Global Branding Department General Manager at Lexus, added: "As fans of films and Luc's previous work, Lexus is privileged to help bring Luc's dream to life. We enjoyed the challenge of bringing Lexus' design philosophy and technology innovations to this project. We look forward to developing our partnership with EuropaCorp as we strive to give audiences the most amazing experiences imaginable in the coming years."
