Chevrolet has been pretty lucky in races they have participated in. From the Chevrolet SS, the Impala, to the Camaro. Recently, the company introduced the Camaro ZL1, which will be the race car they will use for the 2018 season.
To give you a little bit of a back story, the Chevrolet SS has won around 70 MENCS races for the company since it replaced the Impala in 2013. Besides that, the company has also used a Camaro in the Xfinity Series in the same year.
In the past four years, Chevrolet has been running the SS performance sedan, but since it is going out of production this year, they needed a replacement, and this is how the 2018 Camaro ZL1 enters the picture. The ZL1 is powered by a supercharged 650 horsepower V8 so the manufacturer is pretty confident to race this model.
The executive vice president of GM Global Product Development, Mark Reuss is proud to say that the Chevrolet, Camaro and ZL1 are all synonymous with winning, both on and off the race track. Having said that, he is even more excited to announce that a Camaro will be at the NASCAR Cup Series next year, considering the fact that it comes with a ZL1 badge. Everyone is excited about this development, including the drivers, teams, fans and customers.
To support Reuss’ statement, Jim Campbell, vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports also said that drivers have always relied on Camaro to win races and championships, whether it is an amateur or a professional sports car and drag racing - including the NASCAR XFINITY Series. Campbell is looking forward to taking the 2018 Camaro ZL1 out at the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup champion who has been racing since his debut in 2001, was present during the announcement that the Camaro ZL1 will be the 2018 race car.
Johnson made a comment on the Camaro ZL1 saying that it indeed is a good-looking car, besides all the history it has got. This means that the car will be a hit to NASCAR fans. He also expressed his excitement to take the ZL1 on the track as he enjoys driving the car on the street.
So far, Chevrolet has been the biggest name in NASCAR’s history, with its impressive number of wins. All in all, they hold a record of 39 manufacturer titles, as well as 13 consecutive wins from 2003 to 2015 - this alone is very impressive. It was in 2016 when they lost their streak to Toyota. However, they still won the driver’s title with Jimmie J.
