Carbon fiber has become a trend for cars nowadays. It is like the “diet pill” for cars. The car’s weight can be reduced greatly when certain parts or even entire bodies are made of carbon fiber. Other than that, it just simply makes cars look stunning and enhances those that already boast a stunning physique. Sprinkling a little bit of raw carbon on road cars adds an extra bit of kick. This dash of magic has been seen on the door sills of the BMW i3 as well as the entirety of a Ferrari Enzo. Even Honda’s luxury line Acura is following this trend on their all new Acura NSX GT3.
Earlier this year, the most awaited Acura NSX went on sale and we thought it couldn’t get any better than that. But Acura still had a powerful card up its sleeve that even when the NSX was still good as new they just had to release an even better and faster version. Lo and behold, the Acura NSX GT3 made its first appearance at the 2016 New York Auto Show.
The NSX GT3 will be Acura’s entry to the FIA GT3 class this year. It was tested in several race circuits in Europe as well as Japan and was recently tested in California under the supervision of Honda Performance Development race engineering group. The NSX GT3 has a lot in common with the road-legal NSX in terms of overall design, the fascia and headlights as well as its “ultra rigid” and lightweight body. It is slightly different from the standard NSX in terms of features, i.e. new hood with larger vent and taller air dam to assist engine cooling, and larger spoilers are a few of those, while sporting an extensive roll cage and a carbon fiber racing seat. It uses the same engine design as the standard NSX and is powered by the same twin-turbo 3.5-liter DOHC V6. Unlike the standard NSX, power will be sent on the rear wheels of the NSX GT3 using a six-speed, sequential-shift racing transmission. Expect the performance figures to change for the NSX GT3 and for the prices to be significantly higher than the standard NSX, somewhere near the $479,216 base price for the Porsche 911 GT3 R.
We thought Acura was done with surprises after it dropped the bomb for the NSX GT3 but they have more in store for the race car. Since the NSX GT3 will be competing in the GT3 class race this fall, it will have to be light and as nimble as can be. Thus, what better way to look stunning while shedding off that extra weight than to cover the Acura NSX GT3 with a bare carbon finish.
Earlier this month, a series of new images of the NSX GT3 was released showing off its exposed, lightweight, carbon fiber body work at the GingerMan Raceway in Michigan. The bare carbon fiber body panels will be exclusive to the NSX GT3 only while we’re told not to expect such a finish on the standard NSX. This kind of material is strategic for the NSX GT3 since it gives a lighter curb weight and greater propensity for oversteer, perfect for the race circuit.
The Acura NSX GT3 will be expected to debut in 2017 with no specific date yet. By then, the NSX GT3 will be fully dressed in racing livery but we’re hoping it will still leave space to expose its carbon panels to make it even more magnificent as it twists and turns in the racing circuit. The NSX GT3 is now on its final preparations to make it worthy to compete in the FIA GT3 class.
