Renault unveils the 2013 Clio Cup racer

Article by Anita Panait, on July 23, 2013

Renault has released new details about its much-anticipated new Clio Cup high performance competition car. Based on the Clio Renaultsport 200 Turbo EDC, the new Clio Cup is a product of Renault Sport Technologies’ almost 50 years of experience in motorsport. The new Clio Cup sits on monocoque chassis that is reinforced by a welded roll cage, resulting to increased safety and a stronger body.

Clio Cup features an aerodynamic body kit that allows it to perform more handily on the track. Thanks to the expertise of engineers at Renault Sport Technologies, the Clio Cup is run by powerful 1.6-liter direct-injection turbo engine that provides up to 220hp of output and 270Nm of constant torque.

The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission that allows gear shifts in just 100 milliseconds. The new Clio Cup comes with the classic gearstick as standard, although steering-wheel paddle shifts are available as an option.

Clio Cup also comes with adjustable shock absorbers that when combined with adjustable axles enables teams to set the car up to suit different track conditions and driving styles. Two tires have been developed in cooperation with Michelin and Dunlop, which are fitted around 17-inch wheels.

The UK series will remain on Dunlop tires for the 2014 season. Braking is a strong point of the Renault Clio Cup, as it is equipped with 320mm ventilated discs with 4-piston calipers. Priced 39,900 Euros plus VAT, the new Clio will come fitted as standard, for the first time, with a steering wheel mounted paddle-shift gear change system.

“Renault UK has been an integral part of the BTCC package for 21 seasons, since its inception, and we’re now looking forward to the arrival of the new Clio Cup race car in 2014 which will also be our 40th anniversary year in British motorsport”, said Jeremy Townsend, Renault UK Communications Director, “We’re at the start of an exciting new era for the championship, securing its continued place on the BTCC package is key to future success. On behalf of Renault UK, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Alan Gow [BTCC Series Director] and his team at TOCA for their continued support.”

Renault’s new Clio is the first production car model to fully express Renault’s design rebirth encouraged by Laurens van den Acker. The aim was to embrace the styling and feelings of the brand's concept vehicles and bring them to the production cars. The all-new Clio fulfils this goal.

New Clio is immediately identifiable because of its front styling that features a pronounced Renault emblem, set boldly and vertically against a glossy black background, a trademark first applied on the DeZir concept. This front treatment is even more distinct from the headlights configurations that include chrome touches and LED day running lights.

Offered exclusively as a five-door, the new Clio has an athletic profile, accented by the combined rear door handles hidden close to the quarter lights in the rear.

Renault new Clio will be on sale from introduction in a selection of eight colours, including four new ones. One of them is the distinct launch tone, Flame Red, which was inspired by the DeZir concept vehicle.
