Tanner Foust of VW Andretti Rallycross wins Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados I

Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross logged its third straight win at the Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados I, with Tanner Foust leading its charge. Teammate Scott Speed grabbed second place and managed to take the overall points lead even after his VW Beetle was involved in a last-lap contact that destroyed his left front wheel.

The last man on the podium was Joni Wiman of Red Bull Olsbergs MSE, after Patrik Sandell of Bryan Herta Rallysport received a penalty. During the last chance qualifier, Ken Block of Hoonigan Racing Division suffered a rollover after he struck a dirt berm and was lifted onto two wheels and slid upside down to a stop on the jump.

Block was not harmed but he missed the second main event in his last three races thus losing the championship lead. On the other hand, the main event commenced with Foust taking the lead right away in the first corner, followed by Speed and Sandell.

The Bryan Herta Rallysport driver worked to chase the leaders and his Ford Focus ST took the Kobalt Tools Joker Lap on the final lap. When he came out of the joker lane, his car slammed into Speed’s, thereby sending the Beetle into the air.

The contact decimated the left front wheel off Speed’s car. Sandell actually finished second while Speed came in third. But since Sandell was penalized for the incident and was demoted to 10th, Speed moved up to second and fourth-place Wiman was promoted to third.

After the race, Speed said Sandell has apologized to him a lot. He said that he was fortunate to be able to get his car to the line and that allowed him to secure enough points to grab the overall lead. Speed now has a 33-point lead in the Supercar category over Block.

Sebastian Eriksson of Red Bull Olsbergs MSE is third (35 points behind) while Foust is fourth (44 points behind). Only two races remain in the Red Bull GRC and eight drivers are fighting head-to-toe to grab the Supercar championship.

Foust divulged that they had some trouble halfway through the race day. He remarked that he had no idea how Speed was able to finish with a car that was running on three wheels.

On the other category, GRC Lites, Red Bull Olsbergs MSE earned its second 1-2 finish with Oliver Eriksson and Austin Cindric at the wheels. As of the latest race, Eriksson is leading the GRC Lites championship with 420 points, followed closely by Cindric with 417. Miles Maroney of Dreyer & Reinbold Racing is third with 402 points.

Press Release

Tanner Foust gave Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross its third consecutive race victory, while Scott Speed grabbed the points lead despite heavy last-lap contact that decimated his left front wheel, in Saturday’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados final. After a penalty to Patrik Sandell, Red Bull Olsbergs MSE driver and defending Supercar champion Joni Wiman completed the podium.

“Honestly, we were having trouble halfway through the day,” Foust said of Saturday’s action. “But we went back to work and we pulled out some time. The Andretti team took a car that we were worried about midway through the day and made it good. Somehow, that thing is tough enough to survive on three wheels—I have no idea how Scott finished with that!”

The last chance qualifier was halted by a spectacular rollover by incoming Supercar points leader Ken Block, who hit a dirt berm to lift onto two wheels and slid upside down to a halt on the jump. Block, who was unharmed in the incident, missed his second main event in the past three races and lost the championship lead. The team intends to compete in Sunday’s action.

The main event started with Foust jumping out to the lead in the first corner, outracing his teammate Speed as Sandell claimed third. As the field battled heavily behind them, Sandell worked to make up ground before ducking into the Kobalt Tools Joker Lap on the final lap. Coming out, his car slammed into Speed’s, launching the Beetle into the air and taking the left front wheel off. Sandell crossed the line second while Speed limped across third, but the Swede was penalized and dropped to 10th place for the move.

“He apologized a bunch—obviously he lost control of his car, and we were there to stop him,” Speed said. “Fortunately we were able to get it back to the line. It turned out pretty good for us in points, at least!”

The disqualification helped Speed jump out to a 33-point lead in the Supercar standings over Block, with Sebastian Eriksson 35 points behind in third and Foust 44 points back in fourth. Eight drivers remain eligible for the Supercar championship as Red Bull GRC heads into the final two races.

In GRC Lites, Oliver Eriksson led the second Olsbergs MSE 1-2 finish of the season to take the points lead heading into Sunday’s action. Eriksson leads teammate Austin Cindric by a three-point margin, 420-417, while Dreyer & Reinbold Racing’s Miles Maroney sits third with 402 points.

Red Bull Global Rallycross Barbados resumes on Sunday with Round 11 of the 2015 season. Both days’ main events will be broadcast on NBC on Sunday at 3:30PM ET. Fans can follow the action as it happens with live timing and scoring at http://livetiming.net/GRC.
