2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth debuts at 2016 New York Auto Show

Car enthusiasts are in for a treat as the 2016 New York International Auto Show will be where the 2017 Fiat 124 Elaborazione Abarth will be making its official debut. This model is seen as the continuation of the legacy started by Karl Abarth when it came to performance-inspired vehicles with a rich racing heritage.

It was during the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, with the introduction of the Fiat 500 Abarth, wherein enthusiasts started to associate the DNA of Abarth with a vehicle that while sharp, is fun to drive in. The Fiat 124 Elaborazione Abarth is considered as a successor to the roadster that gave Fiat its first ever win at the European Rally Championship during the 1970s.

Utilizing the same method on the Abarth, the result is a 124 Spider that has been designed and made not just for performance but for excitement as well. It has some of Abarth’s features like the turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder MultiAir Turbo engine that can deliver 160 horsepower and that’s paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic transmission with the paddle shift. It even has the state-of-the-art suspension and the rear-wheel drive.

While the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth will be the newest member of the Fiat 124 Spider lineup, it will provide additional performance characteristics to give it that more spirited and sportier driving experience.

Fiat’s 124 Spider models have long been known to offer a strong rear-wheel drive package with exceptional power-to-weight ratio and responsive handling.

Spider Elaborazione Abarth however uses the engaging driving dynamics of the Spider to provide more fun especially for those who look for performance.

Head of FIAT Brand, FCA – Global Olivier Francois said that while the latest 124 Spider can be considered as an iconic roadster, it manages to blend modern technology and performance with a classic Italian style. The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider in particular boosts the driving experience in order to give customers a vehicle that is fun to drive and is a head turner as well.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider manages to revive this famous nameplate and introduces to the new generation its performance and classic Italian style. It also pays tribute to the first-ever 124 Spider that was launched almost 50 years ago.

With the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider, drivers are sure to get that Italian roadster experience coupled with outstanding safety, driving excitement, and technology, capped off with a unique Italian design. The lineup of the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider will also have the Classica and the Lusso models.

In honor of the return of this classic nameplate, the first 124 units manufactured will be offered as a Prima Edizione Lusso limited-edition. It will have the commemorative badge and the exclusive color combination. For those interested, the Fiat 124 Spider will be available at various FIAT studios across North American starting in the summer of 2016.

Exterior Design

Looking at the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth, one can immediately see that it has a more aggressive appearance with the stretched bonnet and the streamlined silhouette.

Other features on the exterior include the lack side sills, the unique front and rear fascia, aluminum 17-inch Gun Metal wheels, and the quad-tip chrome exhaust that has been sport-tuned to give it that distinct exhaust sound.

The roll bar, mirror cover, and Gun Metal header are complemented with the five paint colors available which include the tri-coat Crystal White Pearl (Bianco Perla), White Clear Coat (Bianco Gelato), Gray Metallic (Grigio Argento), Jet Black Metallic (Nero Cinema), and Red Clear Coat (Rosso Passione).

Interior Design

The design of the interior meanwhile echoes many of the performance –oriented features that vehicles with the Scorpion badge are known for. The interior has red (Rosso) stitching everywhere including the lower instrument panel, wrapped instrument cluster hood, the leather-wrapped steering wheel, and even the parking brake.

In order to make the Elaborazione Abarth model unique and easy to differentiate with other models, it is equipped with a unique gear shift knob, sport pedals with the aluminum highlights, a unique instrument cluster, and the matte black instrument panel bezel.

Offered as standard are the black (Nero) leather/microfiber seats, which come in either black (Nero) or black/red (Nero/Rosso). For true fans of performance, there is also the black (Nero) leather and Alcantara Recaro seats.


Powering the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth is the turbocharged four-cylinder 1.4-liter MultiAir engine that is capable of 160 horsepower and peak torque of 184 lb.-ft. Customers have the option to pair this amazing engine with the six-speed manual transmission or the six-speed automatic transmission with the paddle shifters.

It even has a Sport Mode that adjusts the engine’s calibrations, dynamic stability control system, automatic transmission, and electric power steering. The result is that it allows for a driving experience that is responsive and sporty, as well as offers top-of-the-class performance.

The Elaborazione Abarth also has a mechanical limited slip differential and with its low torque bias ratio, makes for better handling and traction aside from improving the launch performance and delivery of power especially when cornering.

It also has an exceptional suspension which is fitted with the mono-tube Bilstein shock absorbers on the front and rear to increase the traction and provide more precise handling. Braking has been improved as well with the Brembo braking system and the alloy 17-inch wheels with the aluminum monoblock calipers with four pistons.

Performance characteristics
The 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth features the proven turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder engine, delivering 160 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque and is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The Elaborazione Abarth-exclusive Sport Mode changes the calibrations of the engine, automatic transmission, electric power steering and dynamic stability control system to ensure a sporty, responsive and performance-oriented driving experience.

A mechanical limited slip differential, featuring a low torque bias ratio, provides improved traction and handling, as well as improved launch performance and power delivery during cornering. The Elaborazione Abarth’s unique sport suspension includes mono-tube Bilstein front and rear shock absorbers for increased traction and more precise handling. The available Brembo braking system with 17-inch alloy wheels offers monoblock aluminum calipers with four pistons, allowing for improved braking.

Aggressive appearance
With a streamlined silhouette and a stretched bonnet, the Fiat 124 Spider Elaborazione Abarth has an aggressive appearance, with unique front and rear fascia, black side sills, 17-inch Gun Metal aluminum wheels and a sport-tuned, chrome quad-tip exhaust with a unique exhaust sound. The Gun Metal header, mirror cover and roll bar complement five available paint colors: Bianco Gelato (White Clear Coat), Rosso Passione (Red Clear Coat), Nero Cinema (Jet Black Metallic), Grigio Argento (Gray Metallic) and tri-coat Bianco Perla (Crystal White Pearl).

The interior design reflects the performance-oriented details for which cars sporting the Scorpion badge are famous. There is Rosso (red) stitching throughout, including on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, wrapped instrument cluster hood, lower instrument panel and parking brake. A matte black instrument panel bezel, unique instrument cluster, aluminum-accented sport pedals and unique gear shift knob help to differentiate the Elaborazione Abarth model. Unique Nero (black) leather/microfiber seats are standard, while leather seats in Nero (black) or Nero/Rosso (black/red) are available. For true performance enthusiasts, leather and Alcantara Recaro seats are also available in Nero (black).
