Mercedes-AMG introduces facelifted CLA45 4Matic that offers top performance

Article by Christian A., on March 18, 2016

After the facelifted Mercedes-Benz CLA and CLA Shooting Brake Facelift, the German manufacturer also unveiled the modified high-performance version just ahead of the 2016 New York Auto Show!

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG CLA45 4Matic offers a rather unique mix of individuality with an extravagant design and sporty driving experience. The CLA was first sold in the U.S. back in 2013 and was the first-ever compact car to come from Mercedes-Benz. It was a highly successful vehicle for an entry-level model with 29,643 units sold in 2015.

This represents a 15% increase compared to 2014 and made the US as the CLA’s most significant market for 2015. Mercedes-Benz has delivered in excess of four million units of its compact cars to different customers across the globe. The model series was manufactured at its Kecskémet, Hungary, production facility, which was opened in 2012.

The actual production of this 4-door Coupe though began in January 2013. Since the production facility became operational, it has made more than 500,000 vehicles. It was even responsible for manufacturing the B-Class.

In terms of technology, the 2.0-liter AMG turbo engine in this Coupe is related to the biturbo 4.0-liter V8 engine of the Mercedes-AMG GT which can give a maximum of 503 hp of output. The turbo four-cylinder engine had already won the "Engine of the Year Award" twice.

The AMG engine managed to get the award for the engine category of 1.8-2.0 liters. It won for the years 2014 and 2015. The different independent experts were all captivated by the engine’s outstanding characteristics and the trailblazing engineering.

Exterior Design

Currently, the company has enhanced the design of its exterior with the LED High Performance headlamps now a standard feature. It also comes with the twin louver radiator grille in a silver chrome finish. No wonder the slogan for the CLA45 is "Avant-garde meets Driving Performance."

While the coefficient of drag has been lowered, the aerodynamics has been enhanced as well. The reason given is that it would improve the stability and the driving dynamics. One of the changes done to exterior is centered on the AMG front bumper.

It has a new A-wing design while the front splitter inserts come in titanium grey and high-gloss black flics. The AMG lip spoiler located on its trunk lid has been redesigned as well. Another new addition can be seen at the rear, specifically the design of its diffuser insert with its four vertical fins.

Mercedes-Benz is also offering as an option the AMG Aerodynamics package. It includes extra flics, larger front splitter, and black AMG lip spoiler with the black highlights placed above simulated air outlets of its rear bumper. As part of the facelift, two new light-alloy wheels have been added.

The standard is the ten-spoke 18 x 8.0-inch AMG wheels in black or titanium grey and has a high-sheen finish. The tires are 235/40 R 18. The second, offered as an option, is the cross-spoke light-alloy 19 x 8-inch AMG wheels in titanium grey or matte black with a high-sheen rim flange. The tires measure 235/35 R 19.

Interior Design

The changes done were not limited to the exterior as the interior has also been given improvements. It now has a red finish that contrasts with its topstitching.

Though the structure continues to have the polished surface with the AMG logo, its AMG trim design now has a matte painted finish.

It is offered in a black/silver or black/red combination depending on the upholstery. Another new feature is the optional AMG DINAMICA Interior package which has a DINAMICA trim element including the full-DINAMICA AMG Performance steering wheel.

In terms of power, the Mercedes- AMG CLA45 4-door Coupe is considered as one of the best in its class with 375 hp output and 350 lb.-ft. maximum torque, giving an acceleration of 0 to 60 in merely 4.1 seconds.

Mercedes-AMG started its wide-ranging modifications last September and this has resulted in making the wheel more fun while increasing the CLA’s emotional appeal.

While the 2.0-liter engine is now more powerful, coming in as standard are the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes.

The 7-speed sport AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT transmission offers shorter gear ratios. Under the Dynamic Plus Package, the company is included a mechanical limited-slip front differential.

Latest AMG design language and improved aerodynamics: AMG CLA45

"Avant-garde meets Driving Performance" is the motto for the Mercedes-AMG CLA45. Offering a unique combination of a sporty driving experience, extravagant design and maximum individuality, the CLA45 also benefits from updated exterior asthetics. LED High Performance headlamps now come as standard, as does the twin louver radiator grille finished in silver chrome.

Aerodynamics have been further improved and the coefficient of drag has been reduced, all to the benefit of driving dynamics and stability. Further exterior features of the facelift include the AMG front bumper in a new A-wing design with front splitter inserts in matte titanium grey and high-gloss black flics, and a new design for the AMG lip spoiler on the trunk lid. New at the rear is the design of the diffuser insert, with four vertical fins. An AMG Aerodynamics package is now available as an optional extra. This comprises a larger front splitter, additional flics, a black AMG lip spoiler plus black accents over the simulated air outlets on the rear bumper.

Two attractive light-alloy wheels join the range: the standard specification includes 18 x 8.0-inch AMG ten-spoke wheels painted titanium grey or black and with a high-sheen finish, with 235/40 R 18 tires. Available as an option are 19 x 8-inch AMG cross-spoke light-alloy wheels with 235/35 R 19 tires. Here, too, there are two color variants, with matte black or titanium grey paintwork, in each case with a high-sheen rim flange.

The interior has been similarly upgraded and interiors are given an exclusive finishing touch of red contrasting topstitching. The new AMG trim design features a matte painted finish while the structure still has a polished surface that bears the AMG logo. It is available in black/red or in black/silver, depending on the chosen upholstery. Also new is the optional AMG DINAMICA Interior package with a trim element in DINAMICA as well as a full-DINAMICA AMG Performance steering wheel.

With a peak performance of 375 hp and maximum torque of 350 lb-ft, the Mercedes- AMG CLA45 4-door Coupe is among the most powerful vehicles in its segment, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds.

Extensive modifications undertaken by Mercedes-AMG last September had already added to the fun at the wheel and emotional appeal of the CLA. Along with the more powerful engine, the new features included the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT transmission modes as standard, plus shorter gear ratios of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed sport transmission. A mechanical limited-slip front differential is available in conjunction with the Dynamic Plus package (optional extra).
