Honda Clarity Electric and PHEV to premiere in New York

Article by Christian A., on March 14, 2017

Honda finally gives us a first glimpse of the upcoming Clarity Electric and Plug-in Hybrids. Based on the only image that came out recently, both new models have their own distinct features as well as some similarities with the already available Fuel Cell.

Honda at this time hasn’t disclosed enough information on the Clarity’s plug-in hybrid and electric versions. Nevertheless, the Japanese car manufacturer will hold the official premiere of the Clarity PHEV and Clarity Electric next month at the 2017 New York Auto Show.

Unlike most conventional battery electrics, it is very likely that all versions of the Clarity will be offered as a 5-seater configuration. Also, Honda will be launching the Clarity Electric first before the hyper-efficient gasoline version will hit the roads. The plugin hybrid promises to deliver more than 40 miles of all-electric driving range. Given the Clarity PHEV’s extended driving mode, the more affordable Clarity Electric on a full charge is expected to deliver up to 80 miles.

Although the teaser image may not be enough to show all its features, Honda shared that each version of the new Clarity has its own key designs and elements. The Clarity Electric, which is expected be priced at 30,000 USD will be the segment’s first most affordable five seater BEV (or Battery Electric Vehicle) while the PHEV will be up on sale in all 50 states.

Much like the Fuel Cell, the PHEV and Electric versions will come out with Clarity’s wide range of standard equipment to suit the vehicle’s sporty driving dynamics. Among which are the Honda Sensing safety suite, driver assistance technologies as well as the latest infotainment system that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

Also, we can expect more quiet and spacious interior in all the three versions of Honda Clarity. Since Honda’s electrified vehicle lineup intends to increase its sales globally by year 2030, it only goes to show why the brand is moving up against other electric vehicles. The BEV in particular will come with added roominess while the Clarity Electric will be one of the most affordable midsize sedans in the market.

Just recently, the Clarity Fuel Cell sedan has been launched in California. The place as we know has strong potentials for hydrogen infrastructure. Nevertheless, the rest of the US will benefit from the two plugin versions in the next several months. Interested buyers better watch out for the unveiling of the Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-in Hybrid at the New York Auto Show this coming April.
