Kia Motors America has partnered with both Super Street magazine and DC Entertainment to come up with a Sportage inspired by what Wonder Woman represents: inspiration, power, and a sense of equality. This customized Sportage was originally unveiled during the New York International Auto Show in 2013.
This is also the first in an eight-vehicle and 10-month partnership that will be composed of the iconic heroes of the Justice League: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. Since there are seven heroes, the eighth version will be the whole team.
The Justice League-inspired Sportages are greatly influenced by visionary Jim Lee. Kia hopes to become a force for good in order to increase awareness of DC’s “We Can Be Heroes” campaign. This relief effort by DC Entertainment aims to assist the people in the Horn of Africa who are experiencing a hunger crisis.
In an interview, Michael Sprague, the executive vice president, marketing & communications of KMA said that Wonder Woman is one of the well-known heroes and she portrays an excellent balance when it comes to agility, confidence, and power -- all characteristics that can also be found on the Kia Sportage. The customized Sportage shows the collaboration between pop culture and cars, Sprague adds.
All the seven cars will be standing together in New York to raise further the awareness for the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign from DC, Sprague concludes. The “Wonder Woman” Sportage has a stylish and sleek look owing to an aero kit that gives it a powerful yet streamlined performance. The red and blue exterior which is accented with stars is based on the heroine’s outfit. The gold trim meanwhile that is wrapped around the Sportage represents Wonder Woman’s weapon which is her “Lasso of Truth.”
On the front grille, we see the eagle chest-plate emblem of Wonder Woman which is flanked by headlight beams in blue, reflecting her piercing eyes. The windshield has a banner that portrays her well-known tiara and the chrome side panels are the graphical interpretations of the invisible jet.
Finally the design of the 5-spoke wheel was chosen to match the stars found on the exterior part of the Sportage. Inside the Sportage, the color scheme of the exterior is retained with the use of red upholstery and dash pieces and paired with blue LED lighting.
The seats are customized and are inspired by the signature garb of Wonder Woman with her logo embroidered on it. The cargo area meanwhile has the stars and eagle symbols and has a see-through panel where a display of Wonder Woman’s bracelet, tiara, and Lasso of Truth can be seen.
Jim Lee of DC Entertainment stated that it was exciting for DC to join Kia at the New York Motor Show in unveiling a car that represents Wonder Woman, one of the founding members of the Justice League.
The effort by the two companies to increase awareness of the ‘We Can Be Heroes’ campaign remains to be a huge draw for many fans all over the country and the Wonder Woman–inspired Kia Sportage is indeed a “must see” at the Motor Show, Lee adds.
