The S3 Sedan was not the only car unveiled by Audi at the 2013 New York Auto Show as the German manufacturer also revealed the 2014 A3 Sedan. Ok, the design is not new to us as the A3 Sedan was previewed by a concept version, but we have to admit that the car looks real good. The four-door car has a 2.64 meter (8.66 ft) long wheelbase and an overall length of 4.46 meters (14.63 ft).
At the rear, the spoiler was integrated in the trunk lid and the lights emphasize the car’s horizontal lines with their broad and low cuts. Just like any other model from Audi, the LED technology is available as an option. The new A3 Sedan lineup will also include two new basic engines. The 2.0 TDI produces 110 kW (150 hp) and develops 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque.
It accelerates the A3 Sedan from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.7 seconds and takes it to a top speed of 220 km/h (136.70 mph). Its combined fuel consumption is 4.1 liters per 100 km (57.37 US mpg) – for a CO2 equivalent of 108 grams per km (172.20 g/mile). The 1.4 TFSI engine delivers 140 hp (103 kW) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft). The 1.4-liter TFSI has a combined fuel consumption of just 4.7 liters fuel per 100 km (50.05 US mpg); its CO2 emissions are 109 grams per km (175.42 g/mile). Moreover, the 1.4 TFSI is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 8.4 seconds, while the top speed is limited at 213 km/h (132.35 mph).
The 1.8 TFSI engine produces 132 kW (180 hp) and 250 Nm (184.39 lb-ft) of torque. The models powered by this engine is able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/g (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds and has a top speed of 235 km/h (146.02 mph). Its combined fuel consumption is 5.6 liters per 100 km (42.00 US mpg), equivalent to 129 grams CO2 per km (207.61 g/mile). Depending on the engine, either a manual six-speed transmission or the S tronic is used. Inside, we find the same design from the A3 hatchback, which means that nothing was changed. Pricing starts at 25,000 euros for the 1.4 TFSI-powered model, in Germany of course.
Audi A3 is going to set a new benchmark for entry-level luxury sedans. That’s according to Audi of America President Scott Keogh. He said that this A3 line-up is redefining class standards when it comes to efficiency, dynamics, technology, performance, and craftsmanship.
With its first-generation Audi A3, the carmaker established an entirely new market segment, which is the premium Sportback compact class. The A3’s quality, dynamic capabilities, value, and equipment were adopted from larger Audis with an added measure of utility and sportiness, which are inherent in the five-door Sportback body style. Moreover, the 3rd generation A3 goes on with this tradition, together with Audi’s first production e-tron vehicle.
Additionally, the Audi A3 sedan raises the bar and breaks boundaries when it comes to expectations for entry-level luxury sedans. It marks the very first time that a vehicle from the A-segment offers MMI technology, 4G LTE connectivity, Bang & Olufsen audio, and Audi drive select.
Even the all-new premium A3’s base model is equipped with standard features, including leather upholstery, rain sensing wipers, Bluetooth technology, panoramic glass sunroof, and Audi pre sense basic.
Aside from the standard technologies, the A3 sedan also features new, segment-first technologies. A key example is the new NVIDIA GPU (graphics processing unit), which generates complex 3D images used in all voice control, media navigation, telephone, and online functions. The Tegra graphics processor fundamentally powers tablets as well as other mobile devices.
It is also used in various medical applications and in 3D gaming. Another industry-first is the Audi phone box, which is a compartment under the center armrest and which boosts the cellular coverage of a mobile phone by wirelessly connecting to a specialized antenna placed in the rear windshield.
