Acura has unveiled a prototype of its ZDX luxury sports coupe at the New York International Auto Show, with plans to commence sales of the production version in the fall of 2009. This four-seater sports coupe is designed to usher in a new era for Acura in terms of alluring styling, modern luxury and precise fine-tuning.
True enough, the ZDX features bold fender flares, intense curves and a sharply raked roofline that all muddle the borders between coupe, sedan and SUV. Likewise, the ZDX prototype features flowing lines that run from the headlights to the rear.
However, the ZDX prototype remains true to its coupe-inspired styling, as evidenced by the rear door handles ingeniously concealed in the C-pillar. It also features a highly functional cargo space on the rear as well as a storage room underneath the floor.
Accentuating its exterior looks are dual chrome exhaust outlets and nine-spoke wheels wrapped in 20-inch Michelin tires. On the other hand, the luxurious looks and feel of the ZDX continue inside the cabin, with a focus on indulging its front passengers.
In fact, it is more than luxurious to find leather all around the cabin. For instance, the dash and instrument panel are done in hand-stitched leather and are sweeping down to form a dual cockpit layout. Not only that, the seats are also wrapped in premium leather and are reinforced to provide enough support to passengers during sporty driving as well as offer comfort during a long trip.
The cabin also features a black monochromatic center stack that lead to the textured metallic center console. These features greatly complement the black and pearl white leather trim. For an even more luxurious feel, the steering wheel is wrapped in thick leather and is designed to provide ample grip.
It is also framed by racing-inspired paddle shifters to allow drivers to have better control of their vehicle. Another luxurious feature of the ZDX is a panoramic glass roof that runs along the entire length of the vehicle. On the road, the ZDX promises to deliver a sports sedan-like performance with a V-6 engine at its core.
The engine is mated to a smooth shifting six-speed automatic gearbox. Thanks to Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, the ZDX offers remarkable handling and cornering capabilities no matter what the weather condition is.
With these, the ZDX prototype definitely combines the styling of a coupe, the presence of a sedan and the flexibility of an SUV. Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales, remarked that the ZDX’s coupe-styling, luxurious interior and remarkable versatility have allowed it to define its own segment while appealing to an entirely new customer.
Michelle Christensen, exterior designer of the ZDX, disclosed that the goal from the start was to create a beautiful exterior that could draw people into its rich interior. Thus, when Acura starts selling the production version of the ZDX, customers should expect further refinements in terms of performance, technology and safety.
