Audi its latest concept named Crosslane Coupé at the Paris Motor Show. This concept proves the automaker’s goal to launch a Q2 compact SUV. According to insiders, the Crosslane Coupé concept is a two-door SUV with 2+2 seating and powered by a range-extender electric drivetrain. The measurements of the concept are 4250mm long, 1900mm wide and 1500mm high, with a 2550mm wheelbase.
This means that it is a bit longer, wider and taller when compared to a three-door Audi A3. However, it is shorter and lower riding than a Q3, which is presently the entry-level Audi SUV. The Crosslane Coupé that’s prepared by Wolfgang Egger has a low, wide stance. It features a 3D grille design that features the future styling direction for Audi’s Q models.
The most interesting feature is the removable roof. The driver and front passenger can unlatch it by an electric drive, remove it from the body structure and fit it over the trunk. This means that the Crosslane Coupé Concept can be transformed in a cabriolet. Powering the concept is a 116bhp, 184lb ft electric motor and battery pack, allowing for an all-electric range of nearly 80 miles. When the battery runs out, the electric motor will be powered by a three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine with 130bhp. Notably, direct drive from just the engine isn’t possible.
According to the official press release, fuel consumption is only 1.1 liters per 100 km (213.81 US mpg) and CO2 emissions of just 26 grams per km (41.84 grams per mile). It’s believed that the Q2 will enter production in 2015 as a direct competitor to the next-generation Mini Countryman.
The new SUV will be positioned below the Q3 in Audi’s range. The final car can be distinguished from the Crosslane Coupé by its more conventional five-door layout, four-seat cabin and a higher roofline to boost practicality. However, the basic exterior design theme will be carried over. Audi bosses will make the final decision on what will become of the Q2 later this year.
The trunk creates a distinct pan inside the body platform; it is joined to the backs of the posterior seats, which are isolated from the seat cushions. With a single press of the button, the whole unit moves forward by 40 cm electrically. This is the process by which the latched roof extends to its final position, thus offering protection to the luggage. Meanwhile, the surface below the trunk can now be accessed, offering a flat storage facility for soiled or wet stuff.
The front passenger and the driver occupy the sport seats that are automatically adjustable with incorporated head restraints, the outer layer of which is manufactured from CFRP. The central console is connected to a huge selector lever, which is extended electrically when the vehicle’s ignition starts; this system is utilized to manage the hybrid drive. The steering wheel spokes integrates control surfaces which can be operated by the thumbs. These can also be operated almost intuitively through a touchpad provided on the central console.
The lowered dashboard is clearly curved to the direction of the driver. The controls of the air conditioning system use small displays. The virtual monitor on the instrument cluster can be switched between two various levels, while a power meter displays the operating status of the drive system.
Audi connect refers to the online services provided for the Audi crosslane coupe. Its occupants are constantly linked to web via Facebook or Twitter or by posting multimedia files documented on the road. The “Escape Manager”, a totally new software, allows passengers to review the routes and highways they pass through for their peers.
