The new Infiniti Q80 Inspiration marks the luxury brand’s first venture into the upper levels of the premium sedan category. Thus, this new concept provides a glimpse into Infiniti’s Q80 Inspiration design language as well as into its smart powertrain technology.
As a full-size four-door luxury fastback, the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration defies conventions with its proportions and body styling. As Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President for Product Strategy, put into words, the Q80 Inspiration concept was meant to bring disruption in the premium sedan category. However, this disruption will be done in style, elegance, and emotion. Bancon remarked that the new Q80 Inspiration is how Infiniti sees the future of mobility in the higher end of the brand’s portfolio. He added that the new Q80 Inspiration serves as a precursor of a production model in this segment, making it integral to Infiniti’s future.
The new Q80 Inspiration is designed to be bold and stunning with a lot of presence. However, this isn't just a result of the imagination of Infiniti's talented design team, as this design is well-thought. This is evident on its dimensions, which measure at 5,060 mm (199.2 inches) in length, 2,010 mm (79.1 inches) in width, and 1,340 mm (52.8 inches) in height.
The innovative and premium aspirations of this new concept don’t end outside and are continuous into its cabin. Accessed through wide opening portal-style doors, the cabin features four individual seats, a simplified driver interface and a distinct head-up display (HUD). This display only shows the information that drivers need, in line with human-centric ethos of the new Q80 Inspiration.
An HUD is also provided for the front passenger, but this display show information from a smartphone linked to the telematics system of the Q80 Inspiration. A touchscreen -- positioned in the rear of the front seat rest – is provided for each rear passenger, allowing them to enjoy the on-board entertainment package.
In line with its premium character, the new Q80 Inspiration sports a detailed interior with a sculptural panoramic glass roof and quilted leather seats as well as a number of Alcantara, leather and metal finishes.
Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director, quipped that from a design perspective, the Q80 Inspiration embodies provocation, as it is a car that defies conventional dimensions and the form of premium sedans. It blends feminine elegance and muscular looks while offering premium levels of styling and materials as well as craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Infiniti designers made sure that occupants benefit from a welcoming, uncluttered interior environment with the new Q80 Inspiration concept. Albaisa remarked that modern design tends to make things more complex when adding more interior features and technology. Thus, with the new Q80 Inspiration, designers worked to re-define and simplify interaction within the vehicle. He noted that while the Q80 Inspiration contains features that are premium, engaging and smart, Infiniti primarily aimed to inject simplicity.
At the heart of the Infiniti is an all-new, downsized twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine and hybrid electric powertrain – combining to deliver a max output of 550 hp. This new V6 mill serves as a precursor to a new family of engines that will be equipped into new Infiniti vehicles within the next two years.
The new V6 engine marries extreme performance with high levels of fuel efficiency, as it could consume just 5.5 liters of fuel per 100 km (42.8 mpg) and emit around 129 grams of carbon dioxide per km. As paired to a hybrid powertrain, this smart drivetrain could – depending on demand or on driving conditions -- switch from rear-wheel drive to all-wheel drive.
