The latest iterations of the Audi A5 Sportback and its performance-laden S5 Sportback sibling have arrived. For their second generation, the Audi A5 Sportback offers a great combination of elegant exterior design, superior interior luxury and comfort, high functionality and the latest in in-car connectivity and infotainment. In addition, the new A5 Sportback comes updated with high-performance drives, state-of-the-art driver assistance systems and reengineered suspension systems.

Interestingly, the new A5 Sportback could be availed as a bivalent g-tron that could be fueled by any of the following: Audi e-gas, natural gas or gasoline. Its S5 version, meanwhile, is now powered by a new six-cylinder turbo engine that could provide up to 354 hp of output and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque.

Exterior Design

The new Audi A5 Sportback represents a fusion of taut surfaces and dramatic shapes, with its short overhangs, stretched wheelbase, and long wraparound front lid -- with power dome – highlighting the potent nature of this luxurious vehicle.

Its front end is distinguished by flatter and wider 3D Singleframe grille while its sides are marked by wave-pattern shoulder line, which has a three-dimensional character that allows for a strong interplay between light and shadow.

At the same time, the coupe’s quattro genes are well-conveyed by the pronounced bulges over the wheel arches. Meanwhile, the rear end of the new Audi A5 Sportback is provided with horizontal and precise styling. The lid for the A5 Sportback’s stretched luggage compartment now ends with a distinctive spoiler edge.

Interior Design

Inside, the new Audi S5 Sportback offers a roomier cabin with the interior growing by 17 mm (0.7 inches).

Its driver and front passenger would enjoy a gain of up to 11 mm (0.4 inches) in shoulder room while rear passengers would be delighted with the 24-mm (0.9 inch) increase in rear knee room. The sense of spaciousness inside the Audi S5 Sportback is furthered by the horizontal architecture of the instrument panel. This level of roominess is also felt with the amount of cargo that the A5 Sportback could accommodate – at 480 liters (17.0 cu ft).

For further convenience, customers may avail of the optional sensor control for opening and closing the coupe’s electric luggage compartment lid. As expected of a vehicle made by Audi, the interior of the new A5 Sportback comes loaded with premium materials, precise fittings and great blend of colors. Customers could set the right cabin mood for any trip by availing of the optional ambient lighting with a choice of 30 colors.

The new Audi A5 Sportback allows drivers to control all functions intuitively and effortlessly, thanks to a new operating and display concept that includes free-text search. Customers may also avail of the Audi virtual cockpit with various display options, replacing the standard analog instrument dials.

While the standard 12.3-inch high-resolution TFT monitor is a highly welcome feature for showing pertinent information, there is also the optional head-up display (HUD) that projects these data onto the windscreen as easy-to-understand symbols and digits. In the area of infotainment, the new Audi A5 Sportback is provided with MMI navigation plus MMI touch, thereby offering features like an 8.3-inch monitor (resolution: 1,024 x 480 pixels), a DVD drive and 10 GB of flash storage.

Exterior design

The Audi designers have brought together dramatic shapes and athletically taut surfaces in the design of the new A5 Sportback. The stretched wheelbase, the short overhangs and the long, wraparound front lid with power dome emphasize the dynamism of the five-door coupé. The three-dimensionally modeled Singleframe grille is significantly flatter and wider than on the previous model.

The wave-pattern shoulder line imparts the A5 Sportback with emotional elegance. It is even more strongly accentuated than on the previous model and traces all three dimensions. This creates an interplay of light and shadow. The pronounced bulges over the wheel arches underscore the quattro DNA. The rear end exhibits horizontal, equally highly precise styling.

The stretched luggage compartment lid terminates with a characteristic spoiler edge.

Interior

The new Audi S5 Sportback has grown significantly inside. Its interior length has gained 17 millimeters (0.7 in), the shoulder room for driver and front passenger up to 11 millimeters (0.4 in) and the rear knee room 24 millimeters (0.9 in). The sophisticated materials, precision of fit and color harmonies in the interior are typical of Audi. The horizontal architecture of the instrument panel creates a sense of spaciousness. The optional ambient lighting with 30 colors to choose from always evokes a fitting interior mood.

With 480 liters (17.0 cu ft) of luggage capacity, the A5 Sportback rates among the best in its class. Audi also offers the option of sensor control for opening and closing the standard-fit electric luggage compartment lid.

Display and controls

Thanks to the all-new operating and display concept, including free-text search, the driver can control all functions effortlessly and intuitively. As an alternative to the standard-fit analog instrument dials, there is the Audi virtual cockpit. The various display options bring the driver added convenience. The large, high-resolution TFT monitor (12.3 inches) presents richly detailed graphics. The optional head-up display projects all relevant information onto the windscreen as easily comprehensible symbols and digits, thus enabling the driver to keep their eyes on the road.

Infotainment and Audi connect

Audi’s top version is MMI navigation plus with MMI touch. It includes such features as 10 GB of flash storage, a DVD drive, Audi connect services free of charge for three years, up to five free navigation updates and an 8.3-inch monitor with a resolution of 1,024 x 480 pixels. Audi MMI navigation plus works in close cooperation with many of the assistance and safety systems.

The Audi smartphone interface integrates iOS and Android cellphones in an environment specially developed for them in the MMI. The Audi phone box connects smartphones to the on-board antenna to provide superior reception quality. It also charges the smartphone inductively, without any wires, using the Qi standard. The Bang & Olufsen Sound System with innovative 3D sound opens up the spatial dimension of height and gives the driver the sense of sitting in a concert hall. Its amplifier supplies 755 watts of power to 19 loudspeakers. The Audi tablet serves as a flexible Rear Seat Entertainment device, both inside and outside the car.
