2017 MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Clubman offers impressive performance with 231hp and 350Nm

Article by Christian A., on September 26, 2016

The arrival of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman will mark another milestone in the British brand’s exclusive line-up. In fact, its world premiere is expected at the upcoming 2016 Paris Auto Show. Given that, it probably won’t hurt if we’ll have our own sneak peek and see what MINI has added to boost its iconic premium compact segment.

Just like any other John Cooper Works models, the Clubman is equipped with a sports car-themed cockpit, aerodynamically enhanced exterior plus its exclusive package of engine and suspension systems. Other model-specific standard features include the advanced steering wheel and cruise control w/brake function, Radio MINI Visual Boost, Comfort Access, Park Distance Control, MINI Driving Modes and the iconic LED headlights.

Aside from the fully enhanced power transmission (both on the rear and front wheels), the Clubman now has the new Performance Control system among its standard features. Moreover, the 2nd generation model now comes with a great deal of equipment such as the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) unit with Dynamic Traction and Electronic Differential Lock.

MINI also includes the 18-inch Black Grip Spoke alloys, Brembo brakes and sports exhaust on the soon-to-be-launched compact car. Likewise, the new MINI JCW Clubman offers an amazing set of 19-inch light alloy wheels plus the Dynamic Damper Control system by option.

Exterior Design

For its aerodynamically optimised exterior, MINI has now replaced the usual parking lights and fog lamps at the front with new air intakes for better cooling. The sports exhaust system also features elongated dual pipes adjoining its wide apron at the rear. Other than the rear spoiler, the back end also consists of MINI’s iconic honeycomb grille embossed with a stunning JCW emblem at the centre.

Judging from the outside, the Rebel Green body finish looks gorgeous either with red or black sport stripe combination. These two bold contrasting colours are exclusively available for JCW models while the red paint for the roof and mirror caps is standard.

The Clubman’s exterior dimensions measures 1,441mm tall, 1,800mm wide and 4,253mm long while the wheelbase makes a total of 2,670mm, allotting sufficient amount of space for its overall interiors.

Interior Design

On the inside, the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman’s well-designed passenger cabin can seat 5 people securely. Its 360L luggage cabin can extend its capacity by up to 1,250L with the optional 40:20:40 split folding rear seats. Otherwise, the standard volume capacity would be enough simply by folding down the back support. Apart from the storage package, additional features available (as options) include roof rails and tow hitch with detachable ball head.

John Cooper Works interior offers an exquisitely designed roof liners and sill finishers in anthracite plus the standard Dinamica fabric or leather for its upholstery. The sporty interior goes well with MINI’s stainless steel footpad and pedals at the driver’s section as well as with MINI’s leather wrapped steering wheel.

MINI’s high-end dashboard comes with the central instrument panel with 6.5-inch colour display while an optional 8.8-inch screen is also available. As an alternative, you can also avail of MINI’s Head-Up-Display specifically designed for John Cooper Works edition. For easier operation, a series of toggle switches is placed within arm’s reach (i.e. electric parking brake, MINI Controller and keyless engine activation). The steering wheel meanwhile is equipped with shift paddles (for the 8-speed) aside from the built-in multi-functional switches.

Other highly useful features for the driver include rain sensor w/ adaptive lighting system, daytime running lights in LED, collision warning and Intelligent Emergency Call. Also, MINI JCW has now integrated the entire assistance systems available for the new Clubman model. It’s quite a long list but somehow it involves road sign detection unit, high beam assistance, initial brake function and cruise control technology with built-in camera. There’s also a separate rear-view camera to use with the Parking Assistance feature.

MINI also offers exclusive suites for customisation such as the MINI Yours Interior Style (in three options), MINI Yours Sports steering wheel package and the special chrome plated line. They also have the Wired equipment bundle, which includes an 8.8-inch colour touch screen with MINI Touch controller and Professional navigation system. The “Excitement Package” is also endowed with MINI navigation system, alarm, Harman Kardon high fidelity speakers, heatable windscreens and mirrors, ambient lighting system with adjustable hues and LED rings for the instrument panel.

Apart from the integrated MINI TeleServices and Intelligent Emergency Call, the Clubman provides a wide selection of MINI Connected Infotainment technologies. Just by downloading its exclusive MINI Connected App with your smartphone, you can already enjoy a personal mobility assistant to help you calculate the last mile, estimate travel time, search for empty parking, traffic monitoring, reminders and so on. It also has the latest on-line based entertainment services available such as Life360, Glympse, TuneIn, Napster/Rhapsody, Audible (audiobooks), Deezer, Amazon Music, Stitcher and Spotify.

The new MINI Clubman’s body shell is optimised for safety against high-impact collision. For added security, the rear is already built in with ISOFIX mounted seats but you may also avail the same at the front passenger seat (if a child sits there all the time). That, along with side curtain airbags and air bags at the front/side emphasise the brand’s superior standards for safety. On the other hand, some of the standard features designed for comfort include Bluetooth hands-free car kit, AUX-IN and USB ports, Radio MINI Visual Boost w/6.5 inch colour monitor and air-conditioning system. Otherwise, you can also have the optionally available heated seats, panoramic glass roof and 2-zone air conditioning to keep you cooler or warmer during extreme weather changes.

JCW Clubman is powered by a 2.0L direct injected and turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. Claiming to have a top speed of 238km/h, the new MINI still boasts of an increased fuel economy based on its average fuel consumption at 6.4L/100km.

Beyond that, expect to get fascinated even more with JCW’s unique performance characteristics. This MINI baby can spew out an incredible 170kW/231hp at 5,000-6,000rpm. So far, the John Cooper Works Clubman has the most intensified torque figures in all of MINI’s performance series. The compact economy car’s powerful torque shows off an impressive 350Nm at 1,450-4,800rpm.

With its standard ALL-4 all-wheel drive system, the JCW Clubman can go from 0-60mph in just 6.3 seconds or less. The ALL4 is responsible in distributing the right amount of power depending on the road condition. Either way, you can combine it with the optionally available 8-speed Steptronic transmission or the standard 6-speed manual.
