Infiniti Q80 Inspiration Concept leaks before 2014 Paris Motor Show

Article by Christian A., on October 1, 2014

The Infiniti Q80 Inspiration Concept will be officially unveiled tomorrow at the 2014 Paris Motor Show but the stylish vehicles showed its sexy angles ahead of the event. As you may know already, the new Q80 Inspiration previews a new four-door fastback model but also company’s new design language and smart powertrain technology.

And speaking of powertrain, the Q80 Inspiration uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and hybrid electric powertrain that generates 550 hp. Despite the impressive amount of power, the hybrid system returns a fuel efficiency of 5.5 l/100 km (42.8 mpg) while CO2 emissions are about 129 g/km.

"The Q80 Inspiration concept was born to disrupt the premium sedan category," said Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President, Product Strategy. "We aim to do this with elegance, style, and emotion."Q80 Inspiration is how we see the future in terms of moving people in the higher end of our portfolio. This car is making a statement. Q80 Inspiration is a precursor of a production model in this segment and, as such, integral to our future."

The new Infiniti Q80 Inspiration offers a glimpse of the carmaker’s philosophy that autonomous technology should enhance drivers, not restrict them. Considered as integral to the carmaker’s vision for the premium sector, this driver-centric approach is manifested through the vehicle’s on-demand systems.

For instance, the driver could access this autonomous technology – which employs cameras, lasers and sensors – via a button located on the left-hand side of the steering wheel. The driver connects to the autonomous driving technology system through a HUD display – as projected on the windscreen. This HUD allows the driver to choose the information projected onto the windscreen, as controlled through an Infiniti InTouch-style touchpad located in the center console. Whether in heavy traffic or in highway mode, the autonomous system emits tones that suggest a certain course of action that the driver could take. Nonetheless, it is the driver who has the final say on what to do in every situation.

Bancon remarked that as part of the carmaker’s creativity and exploration philosophy, Infiniti regards autonomous driving as an integral part of a premium car of tomorrow. He noted that Infiniti believes that autonomous driving should not do the driving, but instead empower and enhance the driving experience. He quipped that Infiniti’s path of development isn't heading to self-driving vehicles.

While the Q80 Inspiration is a concept vehicle, its naming sense hints at possible production. This means, a production version of the Q80 Inspiration – with its design language and innovative technologies – might soon find its way into a new segment.

Bancon added that Infiniti’s decision to enter this challenging category in a brave fashion demonstrates the carmaker’s confidence. He noted that with its body type, proportions, smart hybrid powertrain as well as autonomous technology, the Q80 Inspiration represents a highly innovative approach. He quipped that the Q80 Inspiration is the highest portfolio entry for Infiniti, fulfilling its vision to compete with a unique approach.

He noted that the concept isn't the traditional premium sedan as it breaks new ground in terms of body sculpturing, passenger hospitality and a powertrain with power responsibly. He described the Q80 Inspiration as a perfect balance between performance and agility.

The new Q80 Inspiration follows the tracks of the Infiniti Q30 that was revealed as a concept at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, with a clear intent of penetrating the premium compact segment. Now, the new Q30 premium compact is going into production in 2015.

Bancon said that while the Q80 Inspiration is a concept vehicle, there is a production intent associated with it. He added that its naming indicates that it will be a part of Infiniti’s portfolio in the future and will serve as an inspiration for of all the brand’s future products.
