Porsche’s iconic 911 is getting a serious rival as the 2015 Mercedes-AMG GT made its world debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. For those who don’t know, this is the second sports car developed entirely in-house by Mercedes-AMG, after the impressive SLS AMG.
Powered by the all-new 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine, the new vehicle will be available in two flavours, the GT and GT S. the Mercedes-AMG GT will get 462 hp (340 kW) at 6,000 rpm and 600 Nm of torque available between 1,600 and 5,000 rpm.
With these numbers, the GT model hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.0 seconds, while top speed is 304 km/h or 188.8 mph. The Mercedes-AMG GT S is available with 510 hp (375 kW) and 650 Nm of torque, which is enough for an acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.8 seconds and a top speed limited at 310 km/h or 192.6 mph.
Despite the impressive performances, fuel consumption is 9.3 l/100 km for the GT model and 9.4 l/100 for the GT S, thanks to the seven-speed dual clutch transmission.
The new vehicle adopts numerous assistance systems from the new S-Class and standard equipment includes Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Adaptive Brake, Attention Assist and tyre pressure monitoring system.
As an option, Mercedes-AMG offers Adaptive Highbeam Assist, Pre-Safe System, Parktronic, Reversing camera, Lane Tracking package including Lane Keeping Assist and Blind Spot Assist, as well as Traffic Sign Assist (included in Comand Online).
“A sports car in its purist form.” This is how Gorden Wagener, Vice President for Design at Daimler AG, described the new Mercedes AMG GT. He called AMG GT as a contemporary sports car that embodies the spirit of Mercedes’ glorious sports cars, as evident on its impressive proportions, flowing lines and sculpted surfaces. He added that the new AMG GT is a flawless marriage between beauty and intelligence.
As it is, the new AMG GT is an embodiment of sensual purity of sportiness and emotion. Featuring rear-wheel-drive proportions, the new AMG GT employs a front mid-engine layout for optimal weight distribution, ultimately resulting to excellent driving dynamics. Its characteristic looks are made possible by its long bonnet with pronounced powerdomes, a setback greenhouse, large wheels, broad tail end and large tailgate masking a practical cargo compartment.
At a glance, the new AMG GT features a sculpture-like appearance and sensuous character, thanks to its positively arched surfaces. Its stunning look – as viewed from the side – is defined by its dome-shaped roof line and frameless doors. Thanks to a muscular detail sculpted from the side wall, the new AMG GT looks dynamic even when not on the move.
Meanwhile, the surfaces and lines on the sides flow -- with a tapered effect -- into the rear end. Although the AMG GT has no lines in its shoulder region, a line is found below, picking up in the rear bumper to visually stretch the body. The new AMG GT features side air outlets with two fins each, although it has no visible aerials that might disrupt the car’s overall looks.
