The new Hyundai i20 made its official debut last week at the Paris Motor Show, in the five-doors version. The car that is going to be officially launched in Europe towards the end of 2008, is based on the new platform with a wheelbase that measures 2,525mm.
When it will be launched, the Hyundai i20 will be available in three levels of comfort: Classic, Comfort, Style and Premium, featuring six airbargs, climate control, four-speaker radio with CD/ MP3 and keyless entry.
The new vehicle will be powered by: a 78 hp 1.2-liter petrol engine, a new 1.4-liter petrol engine developing 100 hp and a bigger 1.6-liter petrol engine developing 126 hp (all the units come with a five-speed manual transmission, but Hyundai offers also a four-speed automatic gearbox available with the 1.4 and 1.6-liter engines).
Of course, the vehicle will have two diesel engines: a 1.4-liter engine developing 75 or 90 hp and a 1.6-liter engine capable to develop 115 or 128 hp (the 1.4-liter engines come are connected to a five-speed manual transmission while the 1.6-liter is available with an improved six-speed manual transmission).
Just like the Hyundai i10 and i30, the new Hyundai i20 is as stylish as its gets. Designed at the carmaker’s European headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the five-door i20 is longer, lower and wider than the vehicle it replaces, the Hyundai Getz. Since the i20 sits on an extended 2525mm wheelbase, it offers more room and better ride comfort to its occupants.
It still features the brand’s exclusive design elements like the bold chrome-topped grille bordered by teardrop headlamps as well as stacked rear light clusters. Accentuating these design elements are integrated door handles and color-coordinated bumpers, as well as 15- or 16-inch wheels.
Interestingly, customers can now choose from any of the new bold colors for both the interior and the exterior. Inside the roomy cabin of the new Hyundai i20 are a number of standard features that its rival models offer as optional elements at extra costs.
For instance, all three trim levels - Classic, Comfort and Style – are offered, as standard, with air-conditioning, CD and MP3 audio system with integrated data display screen and remote central locking, as well as Aux-in socket, electrically operated windows and switchable passenger airbag.
