2012 SEMA Show: Hyundai Veloster RE:MIX Edition

Article by Christian A., on October 31, 2012

Hyundai took inspiration from Hyundai’s RE:MIX Lab program and presented a special edition RE:MIX production Veloster at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show. The special edition production Veloster has a bold sporty exterior look with a distinctive body kit and gunmetal-finish alloy wheels.

The interior has been enhanced with a premium audio system. The Veloster has a turn-key production vehicle but with an appearance and feel that’s focused on the lifestyle. The Veloster is a real “re-mix” with a cool mixture of exclusive elements and options that provide a unique lifestyle product from Hyundai.

The RE:MIX Lab is a national tour that celebrates creativity in music, art, fashion, technology, gaming, culture and design.

It has led to the creation of customized one-off Hyundai vehicles that stand for the best in style, design and performance. Each RE:MIX vehicle boasts individual creativity, passion and connectivity and is fitted with custom audio, distinct materials and bespoke components everywhere.

Hyundai builds on how popular these vehicles on tour are. Before the start of the winter holidays, Hyundai’s new production model, the Veloster RE:MIX, will arrive at its dealerships. The Veloster RE:MIX with a manual transmission has a price tag of $19,900 while the one with the DCT costs $21,150 (plus a freight charge of $775).

Hyundai has developed the smallest engine that utilizes GDI technology, otherwise known as Gasoline Direct Injection. This Gamma four-cylinder 1.6L engine is known for its reduced emissions, great reliability and impressive fuel economy of around 40 miles per gallon.

According to John Juriga, powertrain director in Hyundai American Technical Center Inc., the GDI technology was helpful to Hyundai designers and engineers in developing a powerful engine that has less emission and is fuel-efficient as well. He also said that even if the engine is small, it still was able to deliver big figures in horsepower and a fuel efficiency of 40 mpg on and off the road.

With GDI, the 1.6L Gamma engine produces up to 138 hp at 6,300 rpm as well as a highest torque of 123 lb.-ft. at 4,850 rpm. In addition to the GDI technology, the innovative Gamma engine also has other impressive features such as the Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, a roller timing chain, electronic throttle control and variable induction. It also comes with advanced coatings that reduce friction including the DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) and the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coatings.

To maximize the fuel efficiency of the Gamma engine, Hyundai paired it with a manual transmission with six regular speeds or with the new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) that is especially built by Hyundai.

The innovative dual-clutch transmission has the advantages of the manual transmission such as a reduced consumption of fuel and athletic driving, but also has the benefits of automatic transmission including suave shift quality and enhanced comfort. Moreover, the DCT allows for continuous torque transfer in every shift and nonstop connection for improved efficiency. Meanwhile, in the torque converter, automatic transmissions also lose fuel economy and power.
