2013 SEMA Preview: Hyundai JP Edition Genesis Coupe

Article by Christian A., on October 18, 2013

Hyundai has released teasers for the cars that it will bring to the SEMA Show this year in Las Vegas. Famous tuner John Pangilinan worked on a Hyundai Genesis Coupe to create the latest custom product from the brand. Hyundai will be unveiling three other concepts at the show. Pangilinan has done other concepts for Hyundai in the past also for the SEMA Show.

This time, he uses his signature custom paint for the exterior of the Genesis Coupe JP Edition. The tuning firm refers to this color as Atlantic Blue, which is dark matte blue with a bit of a metallic characteristic to it. The other exterior revisions include wide-body metal fender flares, custom graphics, carbon fiber side skirts and a rear lip from Seibon, an APR carbon fiber front splitter, and custom V-LED headlights.

To boost its performance, Pangilinan chose to apply entry-level revisions for cost-effective power gains and put in an AEM cold air intake and ARK Performance exhaust with “turbo” downpipe. The Genesis Coupe is built on KW Variant 3 coil-overs and a set of 19-inch mystic black MORR VS52 mono-forged wheels covered in 275/30 ZR19- and 315/25 ZR19-size Toyo Proxes T1R tires front and rear, respectively.

The vehicle is fitted with a Brembo Gran Turismo brake kit with 15-inch calipers, and is secured with the use of Muteki SR35 lugnuts. The JP Edition features also comes with Recaro Cross Sportster seats custom-upholstered in Katzkin suede. It is fitted with Takata Drift III harnesses while a GoPro Hero 3 video camera is positioned on the custom harness bar. Raising the appeal of this vehicle is it comprehensive audio system, which includes an Alpine head unit, amp, and two 10-inch subwoofers.

Hyundai Motor America unveiled the redesigned 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to the North American audience at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, also known as the Detroit Auto Show. In line with performance upgrades made on the new Genesis Coupe, the vehicle now comes with more aggressive coupe styling, employing enhanced levels of interior materials and design.

Both the four-cylinder and V6 engines powering the new Genesis Coupe have also been enhanced with innovative technologies. For instance, the 2.0-liter four0cylinder turbocharged engine now features a more precise twin-scroll turbocharger and larger intercooler, while the 3.8-liter V6 engine now employs direct-injection technology.

These engines send power through the wheels via eight-speed automatic transmissions with paddle-shift SHIFTRONIC manual-shifting capability. The new Hyundai Genesis Coupe could also be availed with Hyundai'sBlue Link telematics platform that allows owners to access a variety of infotainment services.

In terms of design, the refreshed Hyundai Genesis Coupe sports a more dominant appearance as defined by its redesigned front fascia, grille and hood with heat extractor cues, as well as headlights, LED daytime running lights and fog lights. When viewed from the sides, the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe exposes new 18- and 19-inch alloy wheels with deeper dimensional sculpting. On the rear, the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe is marked by taillights employing new contours and new LED units.

Just like before, the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe has traditional rear-drive sport coupe proportions, as accentuated by its long wheelbase as well as short front and rear overhangs. The sides of the new Genesis Coupe come with a Z-shaped character line integrated smoothly with a distinct drop-beltline rear window graphic.

Hyundai JP Edition Genesis Coupe

Hyundai and tuner John Pangilinan have again linked up, this time to develop a striking JP Edition Genesis Coupe in a custom-developed Atlantis Blue exterior color. Pangilinan is known in the tuner community for selecting retina-bending color themes for his Hyundai SEMA concepts, and this latest Genesis Coupe is sure to bolster his reputation even further. The eye-grabbing coupe concept will debut at the 2013 SEMA show in Las Vegas, November 5-8.

“John Pangilinan is really a creative genius in color development, especially in his ability to blend color with specific vehicle concepts like the JP Edition Genesis Coupe,” said Scott Margason, director, product planning, Hyundai Motor America. “We’re excited to see the final concept turning heads in our booth at the SEMA show.”

POWERTRAIN AND CHASSIS
Within the engine bay, Pangilinan made the modifications many entry-level tuners choose for the most cost-effective power gains, such as an AEM cold air intake, ARK Performance exhaust, turbo downpipe, and friction-reducing Lucas Oil.

To achieve that perfect ride height and body-to-wheel balance, he installed KW Variant 3 coil-overs, Whiteline sway bars, and an ARK Performance strut bar. Perfectly filling the wheel wells are 19-inch MORR VS52 concave mono-forged wheels in mystic black, with Toyo Proxes T1R 275/30 ZR19 front and 315/25 ZR19 rear tires. Muteki SR35 lug nuts hold it all together. Bringing the JP Edition to a confident halt is a Brembo Gran Turismo brake kit with oversized 15-inch calipers.

EXTERIOR DESIGN
Emphasizing the rear-drive Genesis Coupe proportions are staggered, ultra-wide custom metal fender flares from TS Designs, designed by Jon Sibal. Covering the freshly-shaped metal is brilliant BASF Atlantic Blue Metallic paint applied by Auto Explosion, with custom graphics created by S&A Design. For aero management, an APR carbon-fiber splitter and Seibon carbon-fiber side and rear lip kits have been fitted. Custom headlights with V-LEDS are from The Retrofit Source and Retrofit House.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND ENTERTAINMENT
Inside the JP Edition cabin, Pangilinan chose RECARO Cross Sportster seats with a custom Katzkin suede and smooth leather treatment. Holding the driver and passenger in place are Takata Drift III harnesses fixed to a custom harness bar complete with a mounted GoPro Hero 3 video camera. Pangilinan also makes entertainment electronics a top priority, as evident in his selection of the following components:

Alpine Electronics System built by BP Auto Sound
Alpine INE-W927HD head unit
Alpine SPR-60C component 2-way speaker system
Alpine SWR-T10 10” thin subwoofers (2)
