2013 SEMA Show: Helios Special Edition Jetta GLI Tribute

Article by Christian A., on November 6, 2013

Besides the Jetta Racer’s Dream, FMS Automotive also customizes another Mk6 Jetta, this time powered by the all-new 1.8-liter turbo engine. This model is actually a tribute to the 1989 Helios Special Edition Jetta GLI and comes in the same Helios Special Edition blue-and-black paint scheme as the late ‘80s original.

The color isn’t all, as the Jetta comes with custom body side moldings, a rear spoiler and side mirrors painted to match the Helios blue/black paint design theme. Golf R brake calipers featuring the “Helios” logo replace the standard pieces, while the 19-inch Volkswagen Motorsports wheels in ceramic gunmetal gray hide them.

For an enhanced sound and more style, a new custom exhaust system was added. Inside, we find Recaro sport buckets reupholstered in Helios-inspired blue, black and gray striped inserts.

FMS Automotive also reupholstered the back seats, steering wheel, handbrake, and shifter to match the Helios theme. The interior design is completed by the brushed aluminum pedal caps, aluminum door sills and the RNS 315 navigation system with rearview camera.

Volkswagen Jetta GLI provides remarkable components and choices, for equally impressive pricing. Available in three trim levels, the Jetta GLI has a starting MSRP of $23,495.

GLI Autobahn, with an MSRP of $25,545, features sunroof, 18" alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, heated V-Tex Leatherette seats and the Fender Premium Audio System. The first-rate Jetta GLI Autobahn with Navigation includes the RNS-315 navigation system and keyless access with push-button start innovation for an MSRP of $26,445.

Engine and Transmission

The energetic Volkswagen Jetta GLI is proud of its award-winning 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine, producing 200 horsepower and an entire 207 lb.- ft. of torque at only 1,700 rpm, adding to the drivability and response of the car in both daily and performance situations. The Jetta GLI comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard gear.

This fresh model is essentially lighter than the past Jetta GLI and it provides robustness and performance mixed with German sensibilities. While EPA figures are not yet available, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI is anticipated to return 31 mpg highway with the manual and 32 mpg highway with the DSG automatic.

Premium Features

To make life on the road somewhat easier, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI offers advanced, German engineered premium appointments. Components include standard 6.5" touch screen premium VIII radio with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity, standard one-touch up/down power on every one of the four windows, standard multifunction display (for car status, trip, radio and navigation information when enabled), available dual zone climate control, accessible RNS-315 navigation system and available keyless entry with pushbutton start.
