Mercedes-Benz Vans USA will once again grace the 2014 SEMA show in Las Vegas, this time with the "Mission Metris," which are essentially four new midsize Project Vans that were designed to offer glimpse into the company’s new midsize commercial van entry into the United States and Canada in fall 2015. Mercedes-Benz Vans USA will unveil production versions of the cargo and passenger versions of these projects at a later date in 2015.
Mercedes-Benz Vans USA will also be unveiling the new "Mercedes-Benz Metris" nameplate for the US and Canada, with the "Vito" remaining as the midsize commercial van nameplate for other global markets.
Bernie Glaser, Vice President and Managing Director of Daimler Vans USA, LLC, remarked that the company is re-confirming its announcement at the IAA Truck Show in Hannover in September that a midsize commercial van will be launched in the US in fall 2015. He noted that the company deemed it logical to take a global approach while expanding its vans business in the US. Glaser said the SEMA "Mission Metris" concepts will serve as an effective platform for the company to announce the nameplate 'Mercedes-Benz Metris' while showing off its unmatched versatility, size and safety.
The four "Mission Metris" concepts include the Party/DJ Van (RENNtech), Luxury Van (HQ Custom Design), Fire Chief Concept Truck (RADO) and Mobile Golf Pro Shop (Garmin).
RENNtech’s Party/DJ Van is a mobile DJ van that offers both good looks and great sounds. This van concept features a clamshell-style roof that could open up and serve as a backdrop for a DJ.
HQ Custom Design’s Luxury Van, meanwhile, serves as a suitable example of an inspired executive shuttle van that offers the finest craftsmanship and utmost attention to detail, while delivering the best audio-visual elements.
RADO’s Fire Chief Concept Truck, on the other hand, is a rolling communications center that allows a Fire Chief to move to all locations in several situations. It could serve as a mobile command unit for different local or national government agencies.
Garmin’s Mobile Golf Pro Shop is cut-made for golf lovers as it features a high-tech golf simulator and infotainment system that could be used personally or commercially. This van concept comes with a Mobile Performance Center that allows players to assess their golf game and simulate potential results.
The Mercedes Sprinter continues to post growth in the US large van segment, with sales up 17.3 percent year to date. The 2014 Sprinter boasts of major improvement like its more confident front end exterior design as well as a four-cylinder BlueTEC clean diesel powertrain, safety and infotainment upgrades. The 2015 Sprinter builds and improves on its predecessor.
For instance, all 2500 models come with Crosswind Assist as standard, with increased service intervals of up to 20,000 miles – around 5,000 miles more than on the 2014 model year. Mercedes will offer an optional Sprinter 4x4 version for both cargo and passenger versions in the first quarter of 2015. These versions will be the only ex-factory four-wheel drive commercial van on the market in the US. Furthermore, Mercedes is offering a super high roof that increases the interior roof height up to 7 feet. Likewise, the SULEV option for the standard 4-cylinder BlueTEC engine is the first SULEV diesel engine in the world, thereby underlining Merdeces’ 'Green Leadership.'
On the other hand, up to 75 percent of all Sprinters – independent of model year -- have upfitter treatment, without regard to extra shelving or extensive Recreational Vehicle modifications.
