Subaru has unveiled another concept -- the new Subaru Legacy GTk -- at the 2009 SEMA Auto Show. The other two vehicles include Subaru´s WRX STI and Legacy VIP concept cars. Based also on the new 2010 Legacy, the Legacy GTk concept car is a turbocharged, lowered, beefed-up Subaru sport wagon.
It's ideal for taking to the track or for some autocross action and is described as the ultimate track-ready sporty wagon. The new Subaru Legacy GTk concept car is intended to attract performance enthusiasts who have a family.
Lift the tailgate and there's a Coyote Motorsports XP go-kart for the kiddies. Specialized Vehicles Inc. (SVI), which developed the concept, installed a modified roof, blacked-out headlights, a custom front bumper with integrated fog-lights, hood vents, smoked tail lights and a fully custom black-over-red paint scheme.
With regards to its performance, the powertrain was boosted and is now equipped with a new six-speed manual gearbox, a modified exhaust system and recalibrated ECU, all of which liberates 300 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque from the vehicle's 2.5-liter boxer engine
For safety, the designers also added a short-throw shifter, a viscous coupling locking center differential, a new strut tower brace, a Bilstein suspension kit and a full Brembo brake package with six-piston calipers up front and four-piston calipers in the rear.
A track car is expected to offer a good performance but this does not mean it should not offer convenience, comfort, and even entertainment. As such, the interior of the Legacy GTk offers both function and fun. An example of this functional feature is the "kart friendly" cargo area which has been customized for the Legacy GTk.
It has LED lighting, tie-down points, and rubber decking. Providing comfort are the customized Ultrasuede and leather trims for its interior. This includes the matching seats in the rear and the custom Recaro Sportster seats for the front.
Subaru of America has a longstanding policy of minimizing waste such that the automotive facility of Subaru of Indiana that manufactures the Tribeca, Outback, and Legacy models, has a Zero Landfill status. To meet this standard, Ultrasuede-maker Toray made sure to use its EcoDesign(TM) product.
This product has a base material composed of polyester fill from post-industrial sources and eventually made using Ultra Microfibers that are 100% recycled. The doors and the instrument panel of the Legacy GTk are trimmed with a carbon fiber pattern.
Information about the engine is provided to the driver through the custom boost and the oil and temperature gauges. With the STI aluminum pedals, it gives the Legacy GTk that rally car feel. Entertainment is provided by harman/kardon custom surround-sound audio system which powers 18 speakers through the high-efficiency 11-channel GreenEdge processor/amplifier.
The advantage of having this system is that it is lighter and needs less power compared to the standard mobile audio system. Even then, it can reach higher acoustic levels. The whole system is controlled through the harman/kardon AM/FM/XM/single-CD head unit that comes with a 7-inch touch-screen display.
