Lexus reinvents itself by marrying sportiness and luxury with LC 500 grand touring coupe

When Lexus unveiled the LC 500 luxury sports coupe, it proved to the world that it is brave enough to reinvent itself. Well, it was not long ago when Lexus was considered as a premium brand that has become utterly boring. That could be because Lexus has been creating premium cars with similar designs, similar cues and similar values.

We couldn’t blame Toyota’s luxury brand for doing that. Lexus spent not just years, but decades of building a reputation for high quality and very reliable vehicles. With this, Lexus was able to experience a surge of success. But its own achievements were what made Lexus quite hard-headed about reinventing itself to become a premium manufacturer of also sporty and exciting luxury cars.

Enter the Lexus 500 luxury sports coupe. This flagship coupe is the company’s strongest statement – so far -- regarding the future direction of its production line. It is bound to influence Lexus’ lineup better than the Lexus LFA sports car. While the luxury brand during recent years has been introducing new models like the IS, NX, and RC -- all of which boast of high levels of emotion – the LC 500 is a personification of performance, luxury and athleticism and style.

Exterior Design

What really makes the LC 500 visually appealing is its very aerodynamic sporty shape. Just like the LF-FC flagship concept from which it was derived, the new LC 500 comes laden with sexy curves and emotional forms as well as a low hood and a short front overhang.

This passionate styling embraced by the LC 500 is highlighted by its low yet wide impressive stance as well as Lexus’ signature grille and newly designed mesh.

The front end of the new Lexus LC 500 is further defined by triple LED headlamps, under which lie L- shaped daytime running lights that feature the thinnest projectors in the auto industry.

The front end features an array of functional vents that help cool the engine and improve the car’s aerodynamic stability. On the rear, the LC 500 coupe features multi-layered tail lamps and with the slim design, an active rear spoiler and a rear diffuser.

Interior Design

The Lexus LC 500 is a cockpit-centered interior design in which the driver’s position has been adjusted to encourage sporty and spirited driving. A more intuitive layout to the controls also helps drivers develop confidence.

For instance, the hip point of the driver is located close to the center of gravity of the LC 500, a position where the feedback is communicated easily to its driver. The car’s sportiness is made more evident by the presence of sports seats that could provide horizontal support when cornering. Overall, the interior of the LC 500 provides a friendly and attractive ambiance for the driver.

Looks like Lexus really reinvented itself this time with the new Lexus LC 500 grand touring coupe. It should be able to appeal to younger buyers and make the Lexus not only a premium carmaker of luxury cars, but of sporty vehicles as well.

Serving as the heart of the new LC 500 is the all-aluminum V8 32-valve 5.0-liter that could be found in the GS F and RC F. This V8 engine boasts of a smooth engine sound and a more linear throttle reaction delivering 467 hp of max output and 389 lb.-ft. of peak torque.

It employs a dual intake inlet that helps improve its breathing of the engine while providing a growling sound.

Mated with the engine and transferring the power to its rear wheels is a 10-speed automatic transmission, which has shift times at par or even better than dual-clutch transmissions. Spaced closely together, its 10 gears provide enough shifting bandwidth to allow LC 500 to become an ideal car perfect for any form of driving.
