BMW Performance gives the 2011 X5 and X6 models a makeover

Article by Christian A., on August 26, 2010

BMW Performance has given the X5 and X6 models a makeover. Customizing vehicles is made easy with the many options offered by BMW Performance, including revisions for the drivetrain, suspension, aerodynamics and cockpit. Among the items being offered is an aerodynamics kit, which consists of a new front bumper, side-sills and an insert for the rear bumper -- all finished to match the body color.

BMW Performance also boasts of having rear fins in matt black and a front grid finished in high-gloss black paint. The powertrain tweaks were developed specifically for the V-8 power unit in the X5 and X6 xDrive50i and the straight-six in the BMW X5 and X6 xDrive35i, considerably raising power and torque levels.

BMW engineers adjusted the engines' respective electronic control modules to increase the output of the xDrive50i's twin-turbocharged V-8 to 448hp and 479 pound-feet of torque -- standing for an increase of 41hp and 37 pound-feet of torque over the standard models. The xDrive35i gets gains of 20hp and 37 pound-feet of torque, resulting in an output of 326hp and 332 pound-feet of torque.

With these modifications, the models are able to accelerate 0.2 seconds faster from a standstill to 62 mph. The X5 and X6 xDrive50i can do the 0-60mph sprint in 5.2 seconds while the modified X5 and X6 xDrive35i can do it in 6.5 seconds.

A new sports exhaust system is offered as well. When it comes to the interior, buyers can opt for a new sports steering wheel with a flattened rim at the bottom and Alcantara trim and aluminum pedals. By this June, all features in the BMW Performance product line will be available individually. All the accessories and features will also be sold and fitted by official dealers and special BMW retail outlets.
