British tuner Superchips has recently presented its phase 2 ECU remap intended for the turbocharged 1.6-litre, 181 bhp engine that will be used to power the R56 MINI Cooper S (built from March 1, 2010 onwards). Amid the rising demand for customization parts for forced-induction hot hatches, Superchips’ in-house engineers were pleased on how the performance can be improved by the Cooper S’s direct injection turbocharged powerplant.
Assessments on the MINI’s Bosch MED 17 ECU, as well as the comprehensive dyno testing and on-road assessment led to the creation of a Superchips ECU remap for the 181 bhp ‘phase 2’ Cooper S that increases power by up to 25 bhp at 5,444 rpm.
The Superchips upgrade is felt throughout the range, with increases from 2,000 rpm to the significant gains at the top of the range. Additional twisting power was gained by the MINI Cooper S R56 as a total of 32 Nm (23 b-ft) were added at 3,765 rpm, with gains from 3,000 to 6,000 rpm.
This means that the Superchips ECU remap boosts the performance of the Cooper S to offer a “crisper, more exciting drive.” Superchips claims that its conversion doesn’t affect the MINI’s outstanding 48 mpg combined fuel economy.
Customers who want to install the Superchips ECU remap for their 181 bhp MINI Cooper S models could visit any of about 80 Superchips performance centers, where trained technicians can accomplish the remapping procedure.
Despite the output-boosting Superchips conversion, the R56 MINI Cooper S turbo still manages to return 48 mpg in combined fuel economy, when driven like a standard car. Interested MINI Cooper S (181 hp version) owners who want to avail of the conversion simply have to visit any of the around 80 Superchips performance centers for the installation of the Superchips ECU remap.
The remapping procedure will be implemented by Superchips’ trained technicians, as covered by a full Customer Service Guarantee as well as an industry-leading 12-month/30,000-mile supplementary full vehicle warranty. Superchips’ ECU remap suits all ‘Phase two’ 181-bhp R56 MINI Cooper S models assembled from March 2010 onwards. It could be availed directly from Superchips and its dealer network in the United Kingdom at a tag of £455.00, which includes a 20-percent VAT.
